Hey everybody,

I consider myself a beginner, and music is a hobby more than anything else.

I think it's with some reluctance I post this track I've been working on. It's not very full on, and below average speed at 140bpm.

I've gotten to the point of being bored with it because I've heard it so many times now.

I just need a fresh pair of ears to take a listen and criticize.

Things I know are wrong with it:

1) Boring intro pads
2) Need more drums and hits
3) Better fill ins(when the kick isn't 4/4)
4) Some levels are wrong
5) It doesn't have that smooth 'produced' sound. (I'm having major trouble with this)
6) Not nearly enough psychedelic sounds & FX
7) More panning and automation required.
8) WAY too short, but it's a work in progress
9) Lots more...!

Anyway..

Try to enjoy

Hi, nice track!

Some comments:

. Cool sample at the beginning - something different.
. You can find some nice kicks at: http://www.terrans.co.za/isratrance/
. Watch out for the amount of bass on your mix - sounds like you're not running a subwoofer which can often cause one to mix too much bass to try and compensate. (Buying a sub was probably the single most effective investment I've made so far)
. Nice melodies
. http://forum.isratrance.com/viewtopic.php/topic/29974/forum/2/start/15
. re: Smooth 'produced' sound -> I found it helpful to focus first on kick+bass while comparing against a reference track similiar to the sound I'm trying to achieve. If you can get that sounding massive it becomes a lot easier to mix the rest in as it forms a solid piece of bedrock to build on. The rest of the polish comes from mastering which is another subject altogether!
. There are no rules. If it moves you then it's good.

Thanks for your comments!

I don't work with a sub on my setup, but I do have a sub in my car and comparing to released tracks I thought the bass was not too bad. The only problem was the kick wasn't loud enough. But if I turn the kick up, I get clipping and if I turn everything else down then its SO quiet. Hmm - mastering I guess.

There is no sidechaining in this track - it wasn't needed as the bass never crosses the kick.

So you think a different kick might help?

Wasn't sure if it was a very bassy kick or just overlapping with the bassline

Yeah it might, often if the kick has too much low frequency content (especially on the tail) then trying to get it to cut through the mix by raising the level just ends up clipping things and turning everything else too mud.

Making sure that the tail of the kick doesn't overlap the start of the first bass note also helps to give a bit more definition.

G'luck!

Thanks hummingbird. Always good to get feedback of any sort.

BTW I was thinking of getting a sub, what are you running? Do you need a special monitor type sub or are the choices less limited?

I'm running a Samson Resolv120A which has a built in crossover and amp. Basically I plug my mixing desk into the sub and then run an output from the sub into the amp for my main monitors (Alesis Monitor One, dirt-cheap 2nd hand)

The nice thing is that the sub automatically splits the signal internally so low frequencies go to the sub and the rest to the monitors.

I suppose if you're really stuck for cash you could use a hi-fi sub but on the whole I would seriously recommend that the best place to start spending money if you're into production is on your monitoring setup as being able to hear what you are doing is worth more than any amount of fancy hardware synths or a gazillion VSTi plugs!
