this brings up a whole other issue that I've thought about a lot: the possibility that the desire to play a certain timeslot will shape the style that a DJ or producer focuses on... I wonder if this accounts for the plethora of (IMO) lousy and mediocre dark and full-on acts/DJs... maybe rather than just focusing on the sound they love and pursuing their own creative path, instead some folks are just writing/spinning the sort of thing that will let them play that "peak night set" or that "peak morning set" that they've always wanted to play. I guess this is one of the reasons that I've always had some issues with the standard expectations for the flow at a psytrance event. It seems to me like it could help propagate lots of copycat, genre-following shit.
I'd much rather attend a party where the lineup is created with a unique and interesting vision for the sort of journey/story the lineup will create, as opposed to the standard, and (IMO) kinda boring/trite dark/scary at night, bouncy/happy during the morning. Plus I think this approach, sans all the rules and expectations, would create an environment that would encourage artists to follow their heart/muse/whatever, rather than creating a sort of "follow this formula if you want to play this timeslot" mentality.
...of course this would require a consistently remarkable level of open mindedness on the part of the crowds... maybe instead, we should scrap this whole idea, fire all the DJs, Live Acts, and promoters, and instead just have big ipod+headphones dance parties

It's so hard to spin a good opening set because so few producers make good opening music (imo) |

Depends on what you consider "opening spot music" . Most of the time that's psyprog to me, which there is a lot of good stuff there [i am oh]

Different tastes then I guess (even though I have 2/3 cds you posted tracks of), I've never had a problem making an opening set because there's a ton of what I consider to be good psy prog out there.

^ totally there's a lot of other music that works depending on what type of party, who else is playing, etc- I just used psyprog as an example since shira said there wasn't much music for that time being released

One way I've seen to arrange a party flow, which works especially well for indoor parties at public venues
is to play "party" type music (electro house, cheesy fullon, dubstep) around midnight or so to satisfy the drunken partiers who inevitably show up, and then switch to the real psychedelic experience around 2 or 3 am |

fuck appealing to drunken people. fuck. that. appealing to the far lowest denominator does not a good party make.
imo psytrance parties are best without alcohol.

Alcohol is acceptable when it is high quality alcohol and not shitty canned beer or box wine etc.

Getting a bit snobbish, eh?
The problem with alcohol is that it inevitably goes together with cigarettes. And smoking dudes are a much bigger evil than drunken dudes, imho. I used to have a separate set of cloths for going to clubs, which I would hang outside my window after coming back home. Thank God at least the 90s are over, along with those awful cloves cigarettes...

oh please, ANY ONE with a creative muscle in their brain can think up a good opening slot for a party!! it's the easiest, funnest thing ever. you don't have to rawk the dance floor, you don't have to follow any one, all you gotta do is set up a story! you know "once upon a time..." that's the opening DJ.
good ideas for opening slot music:
*old school trance
*ambient
*experimental/idm kind of beat-oriented (but not some cheesy rave side-genre!!!!!)
*looooonnnnnggggggg samples (haven't you always wanted to play that super long horror movie sample, DJ Evil-Terror-Kore-i-Only-Play-At-3AM??? here's yr chance)
*minimal-tech style trance like kremelur etc (this stuff is also great for late day time/afternoon slots)
i once had a notable local DJ play the opening slot at a desert party of mine. he wanted to play at sunrise. i said "no i want u to open. i dont have any one GOOD to open with..." he acted butt-hurt about it the whole time leading up to the party, then played a phenomenal opening set, mix between experimental chillout/ambient and old school trance. everyone responded quite positive, were talking to me, him about it thru out party "man what a good opening to the party!"... it clearly had an effect on the vibe of the whole event. the DJ in question was very happy afterwards but STILL insisted that he never wanted to do that again. o well...
as for designing your tunes for a certain hour... yeah i mean i wouldn't want to make people endure dog of tears music before, say, midnight, but then i have all sorts of different tunes for either the night time or day time, even slower techy stuff for the afternoon if necessary. and i'm just one artist. if yr a DJ well sh!+ man u should be able to play aaaaaannnnnnyyyyy time and completely k!11 !+ y0.
too many shekels offered on this matter my apologies... |

lol, hating on cheap beer and box wine?! based on my observations at Earthdance in Iowa last year, I imagine there are a whole bunch of midwestern trancers that might take exception to that
...but I guess I'm only a dubstep producer, my opinion's probly not worth much. the only reason any psytrance promoter would book me would be to cater to the lowest common denominator - all those losers who like "party music" and drinking. |

AGAIN with the hating on alcohol
stop it.
stop it right now.
you are all free to get as wasted as you want on anything you like. us drunks certainly don't deny you that right. why in heaven's name would you deny us our pleasure?
some of us like to drink.
some of us like to drink cheap beer. i love pabst.
some of us, (lookin at you, Emmmmssszzz!) really really love to drink and still manage to behave PERFECTLY GLORIOUSLY WELL all fucking night.
Some of us in iowa like to drink 7 or 8 boxes of wine and then beat our friends about the head n neck with the half-empty bladder. i SEEN it.
Again,
WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO TELL ME WHAT I CAN AND CANNOT DO AT A HIPPIE DRUG PARTY?
as far as opening music???
dubstep.
