From a DJ perspective, leave your ego at the door and remember that for a couple of hours you are scoring the soundtrack to an audience's life...Interact with them, watch the dancefloor, play music to suit the situation and influence it and above all - keep the flow going.

The majority of people don't care about hearing killargh tracks, they just want a constant vibe to be present. Body language is the key...Do they want it harder? Do they want it funkier? Does it look like they're getting frustrated because the music isn't taking them where they want to go?

Mixing is easy, one can burn two CDs before the party and play them in a sequential order and things will still be fine, but if you want to be in a league of your own you need to be able to adapt easily, remain flexible and above all keep the party going the way your audience wants it to go!

Keep in mind the psychedelics... The music you choose to play can have an incredibly profound effect on a person and from my experience, in a psychedelic state the music is the one thing that glues the entire party experience together.

The psychedelic aspect is not something I can adequately explain in words, but I'm sure all those who've been there and felt the music fulfill something that no other genre can know what I'm talking about...That's why it's Psytrance.

I like the "time to die" sample... What if the "time to die" sample makes the crowd dance harder? Then is it appropriate?

Methinks there are too many different crowds to judge something as appropriate or inappropriate... Truthfully, the crowd just wants mixer tricks anyhow, right.?.

this is another darkpsy vs melodic psychedelic music
@ ocelot

man you've made very scary tracks, some real dark shit before 2005, i mean have you listened your music?
i think even this is the most hmmm lets say fantasy, imagination music, lets be real there is no peace on earth, no?
and people need to express their feelings, their negative energy, they wanna dance and have a real psychedelic expirience.
to play melodic music with i love you samples is boring as same as playing horror music samples and even porn movie samples.
some people want to trip in horror music, that makes them lower then people who want to trip in mdma vanila sky sexy tunes ?

Have an observation-conclusion to throw into this very interesting topic...

The use of psychedelics is hyped to be the medium of the music when it reality all it does it rewire your patterns of recognition, so that the music that comes out of the speakers is processed and broken down into its individual components with ease.

A reason why a lot of this music is perceived as psychedelic is simply because of the amount of information that's being emitted ... which in comparison to the club music of yesterday is much much more.

Personally I needed the psychedelics to fully comprehend all the info that was being blasted at me. I was heavily into all forms of electronic music, most of which was in a linear techno format. The result of listening to this over years set my brain into perceiving electronic music as "that limited amount of info" Then came Goa (thank you Paul Oakenfold!), which was not so much more info than Techno but still one step up in terms of complexity. It was instantly appealing (maybe it was because we were young at the time but the older EDM heads just didn't get it!)

Then things moved on and on and things got somewhat more complex. Complexity led to what they called "Dark" music which became too much at one point. So much info that it just seemed like noise.

This is where psychedelics played its part. What it did was open up channels for receiving this sound so that all could be parallel processed. Since the music I was experimenting with was twice as complex (not in quality though) and the DJ was mixing 2 tracks with levels up, the layers were just too many for me to comprehend in a sober state. On psychedelics though it was easy as pie.

My belief is that for that required lightspeed jump in processing, the psychedelics played an important role, but in the later years I noticed a lot of the younger crowd getting into this style... especially some very young ones (pre-teens)... they seemed to process the info without any substances.

The conclusion drawn was that they hadn't been born into the simpler electronic styles of yesterday. Their experience with electronica was to be thrown into this complex medium... so their brains adapted. They didn't need the psychedelics and probably won't.

So all in all, psychedelics are unnecessary if your brain is young enough. If you're older and more established in your perceptions then there are two means. Take the psychdelics and get there instantly ... or be guided by an experienced DJ who is capable of introducing more info into the mix "slowly" so that your brain can keep track of what's happening.

That's the gist of it.

Of course, this theory doesn't apply to all the psy styles. "Psy Chill" or so they call it as something special that does the same job but without the overloading your mind. My conclusion for that genre is that it's totally the opposite. That instead of using sound as the complex medium, it uses the silence as the complex medium. I'd say that psy-ambient is the most complex music of all because it's one of the only styles that makes you hear sounds that were never created in the first place.

How can you compare music of aphex twin and venetian blinds to psychedlic music?? There is no comparison they are completely different culture's and feelings! we are talking about psychedelic here or am i in the wrong forum?

Agreed, comparing breakcore with psytrance is like comparing apples with chocolate bars, they're completely different and people like them for different reasons.

I'm sorry if this has all already been said, i havn't read all the thread:

Although i love venetian snares and had one of the greatest experiences of my life watching him on some very strong Lucy, it's completely different from the psytrance scene. For a start it is called PSYCHEDLEIC trance, which suggests the scene has a large focus on psychedelic culture, and suggests the person in control of the music is also in control on the psychedelic trips taking place. However if breakcore has no focus on psychedelic culture and so bares no responsibility on people trips, especially as the drugs that genre focuses on are more uppers like mdma and speed.

Now i know some smart ass is going to make a comment about drugs being bad and it being about the music not the drugs, and although i agree drugs are undeniably a huge part of the music scene, and if you disagree with the fact that drugs play an important part in music then please go find your music collection and burn about 75% of it, and see how it looks then.

Although i agree it is upto the tripper to not take more drugs than he knows he can handle, it is undeniably the responsability of the person in control of the music to acknowledge that there will be first timers there and to take it easy. Fair play if they want to play something evil, but maybe follow it up fairly fast with something a bit more cheerful? After all, if you have a trip in a silent room you will notice it goes in a completely different direction from in a room with music on, because music greatly influences how the trip pans out, therefore some evil music might send someone in the wrong direction.

Now i do agree that if someone goes to a dark trance night they should obviously expect some dark samples and stuff, but at a full on night or something i don't think it's appropriate to throw some evil stuff in there as most people won't be expecting it.
Just my 2 cents, i'm sure alot of people will disagree, Ben           Projection makes perception. The world is what you gave it, nothing more than that. It is a witness to your state of mind, the outside picture of an inward condition. As a man thinketh, so does he perceive- Anonymous
