I found this post at Gearslutz and i think it's worth viewing.....This the definition of HELL and HEAVEN(in that exact order).

Check it out :

I used to really get exited about gear and a big nice desk was one of the sexiest things that I could think of.

Nowadays seeing a desk like that just reminds me of this:

These RAND scientists predicted the future like they had been there already

And here's the proof :

Ok, it's 3 years later than what they said but still........           A friend told me once that the biggest mistake we make is that we believe we live, when in reality we are sleeping in the waiting room of life.

To echo someone on the gearslutz forum

I Mix ITB!

I personally couldn't think of a bigger waste of money what with the way computers are these days.

Buy 200 Behringer fade mixers and be done with it.

To fix recordings of Britney Spears in the mix? And maybe for mixing orchestral recordings.

i don't know... i would really like to mix on an old desk. think about the commitment and organic imprecision which would come from hand-moving faders and hand-twisting analogue potentiometers in a real time, one-shot mix. mixing would actually become a performance in its own right, which might well add something to the creative process.

of course you could do it all ITB, but apart from the unautomatable aspect of a proper console, there's also the sound... i'm under the impression that you can drive channels quite hard on an analogue desk and get some lovely warm saturated gainy-ness, and then there's EQ. it seems like out of the box there are more ways for the interface to impart character to sounds. i have an old soundcraft desk at home which i got for free (!!!) because someone found it in a barn. i have no space to run it now but i definitely want to check it out. if nothing else it would be great to sit and sculpt sounds hands-on... with dedicated knobs for dedicated jobs, as it were.

as for the original post... fucking hell man, look at all that cabling. insane! imagine labelling and binding them all...

and thanks Spindrift, that picture is awesome!

i heard a futurist talking about the computer revolution last night and he said that if current exponential growth in processing power continues then computers will be a billion times faster by 2025... !

If you like to have the sound of analogue saturation and EQ one option to consider is to get a nice channel strip and run your signal through that if you like to warm it up.

They use it to control their weight. When they mix on more than 20 CH they need to walk few meters to regulate the volume and than walk back to the sweet spot to check out if the correction was good. Then you hear something else needs to be corrected and you again stand up, walk few meters, do the tweak, walk back...

It's quite fun and you don't need to go to the gym I guess           "It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception"

not all projects would use all the channels. But your be surprised how quickly you can use them up. e.g. Drums: kick mic, snare x2. toms x 3, hats, 2 x overheads and room mics. thats just 11 channels for drums. then you might subgroup them and have a stereo reverb. Thats 15 channels still just for drums. double tracking vocals and guitar will fill up a few as well. Harmonies and fx stereo returns. Ive only ever used about 40, that was with a 5 piece band.

The cool thing now is that we don't have to have such a big console when we can bounce stems so easily in the computer. Channel strips and summing mixers seem like a good way to get that console sound with out breaking the bank or your back. But it wasn't just about the desk, there was the outboard and treated control room, monitors and then the live room. These guys must have had so much fun playing with all that gear.
