This article has been adapted from an article written by my friend "Eddie Rios" for a Metaphysics journal, a few months back. Please pen down your thoughts, critisims or appreciation.
The power of sound is tremendous in addition to image and form it also generates emotions and extraordinary experiences, depending mostly on our own development of intelligence and knowledge. The prolonged use of this makes the mind transcend automatically to the meditative state on just hearing the word, sound or quote or any thing that is related to it, these are symptoms gives us a clear indication that progress is being made.
The power of sound at different frequencies and amplitude can shatter objects as they create resonance at the natural frequency overcoming the bonding strength of atoms in the molecules formed due to sharing of electrons.
Thoughts cannot be held constantly at the physical level of communication, as attention to its pronunciation, meaning divides the consciousness. Constant fluctuations break the continuity of the consciousness on the thought; further more the vibrations are of a very high rate causing very rapid changes in movement. This process of meditation can be used to purify the environment.
If rhythm is added it generates a serenity and pleasant feeling enjoyable to hear and practice. All in the initial stages of practice use it.
The purely mental level of sound repetition, contemplation is employed along with sound repetition, as the thought resonates it becomes telepathic and can travel any where in the universe instantaneously. It is always better to focus it on any particular deity of ones own choice. The resonating humming sound will be heard as progress is made.
In the transcendental stage of communication there is no differentiation everything merges into feelings and pure energy. The oneness with the universe itself transmits the information as soon as they are generated or born in the mind of the soul spiritual level.
Meditation that uses sound, words or quotations keeps most of the sense organs away from the attention of the consciousness there by letting it dwell with the thought and brings about single pointed-ness gradually. From here the shift of consciousness takes place to whisper, and then to contemplation and finally to transcendental stage, now no extra effort is necessary to maintain the repetition as it becomes automatic and rhythmic.
Why the stress for initiation?
There is no absolute necessity of the initiation as the soul inside everyone can guide us better than all the human adepts, as it is the greatest adept of all. The only problem is to establish the connection and necessary communication with it through our human brain.
One reason that we need the adepts is that we will give them respect, the adept who initiates us to a particular way of meditation must be of the highest level and must have achieved success in using the sound attain the power of it. Thus as per the golden rule of the universe "GIVE THAT THING THAT WE EXPECT TO ACHIEVE" thus we will get respect, a required ingredient, which allows us to get a feeling of piousness, thus modifies our outlook, thus helps in changing the inner look as well.
Secondly the love and blessing of the adept will always be with as a guiding light. This can give us confidence. This makes us take that calculated risk that is necessary to speedup our practice.
Thirdly as meditation cannot be achieved with fear, knowledge that the adept is continuously watching us removes some amount of fear. This feeling does not let us fool our self, as in that level of communication we are stark naked and can hide nothing from him.
Fourthly the power of the adept is continuously with you to give that extra push in the right direction.
But finally it is only our effort that gets us our end result.
Efficiency of repetition of sound is closely related to the degree of concentration. This attracts the power attained by all the adepts that have used the same sound to attain realization and success. The encouragement of these adepts and blessing will ensure success very easily; the truly developed will automatically select the sound from the linage they are connected.
As the aspirants develops higher level of consciousness the form and image of the sound will be clearly visible this is when the are called "mantra dhristha" as per history there are only 34 such persons 4 of them are women. It is said that they could see the forms with their human eyes and they transmitted these to the disciples down the line.
As practice progress the seed or bija single syllable's sound, power and essence as well its link with the divine will become one with him.
Finally pure consciousness is established as he becomes one with the omnipotent, this is when there are no more doors to be opened.
Sound gradually becomes a source of relationship between the user and divinity we can see the co-relation with everything we do or observe. The goal of the aspirant is not reached with just visualization but becoming one with it, continuously staying in this, without differentiation.
Every living being has attained a certain degree of attainment due to the effort in all the previous lives; we start from where we have left our practice in the past. It is only the love of god and our primary goal that allows us to experience the completeness of him that we follow the spiritual path. It is love that even after achieving the ultimate union that makes us takes birth again and again just to guide the fellow souls in experiencing that which the omnipotent want to from the origin of time
The word NAMAHA in the end of each phrase of the quotations, can be understood this way also, NA: - not, MA: - me, Ha: - is. " IS NOT ME". There is a small bit of writing in the previous pages where we said that TO KNOW ONESELF WE SHOULD KNOW WHAT WE ARE NOT. "I am not this or that" is the path of realization by understanding oneself by negating everything. This is what is said by the term "NETHI, NETHI" not this not this. After negating everything what is left is god. We may wonder what can be left? We can negate only what we know is it not the truth? And definitely our knowledge of things are not complete other wise why don't we know god so clearly as everything we know?
Let us try to understand the sound "OM" pronounced as "AAAUUUMMMH" with out connecting it to any religion, sect or group. All the words can be analyzed either using one technique or other. The first letter "AAA" can be said to represent the physical level, concentrating on it will let us be aware of this level better, the second part "UUU" is the mental or intellectual level concentrating on it will let us be aware of this level better, the last part "MMMMH" the hum is the spiritual level, beyond the intellectual. Why we have described this here is that it is necessary to develop an interest I the aspirant to create a new line of thought so that the old habits of thinking that we are so strongly adhered to needs a change.
When the level of the aspirant is developing there will be a visible change one of which is that the sound will start to come from the region of the navel, the length of each syllable will be longer and clear resonating creating an awareness of the entire body and cells with each atom vibrating with them. Gradually these vibrations will be experienced to move upwards from one chakra to the other and reach the crown from here we may feel a flow of energy so simulating and warm tingling sensation covering from the head to the entire body accompanied sometimes with numbness.
This is the state of leaving the physical awareness and entering the mental sphere entirely, there will be a temptation to stay in this state and enjoy it, but it is advised to just observe it and move ahead in the journey of the internal quest.
Similarly light can be understood to be a very good means of achieving the ultimate. This is equally powerful means; most often even if we close the eyes some amount of light is perceived. All disturbances that are felt are the means to see changing patterns that are formed in the mirror of the mind these sudden changes trigger the mental condition in such a way that deeper consciousness is achieved
Eliminating name and form.
All the things in this part of the relative universe have 5 attributes namely, name, form, existence, knowledge and bliss. All these are relative to other things that make it different with respect to accumulation of energy. Name and form are limited to this physical live only, existence, knowledge and bliss are called sat chit anannda belong to the realms of beyond the intellectual
Meditation takes us from the name and form to the stage of undifferentiated and finally removes the separation when ego dissolves into the ultimate. Coming to this stage many may need more that one lifetime.
1st concentrate on understanding using ones own intelligence developed by acquiring all the information digesting this and accepting it will be equal to merging into the mental level.
2nd stage is merging with the universe that is the three states of nature (Satwa purity, Rajas action and Tamas inertia)
3rd stage is removal of differentiation and merging with the omnipotent. Here we come to know that our body under a sufficiently large microscope is similar to the universe; all the organisms and all the organs living within are different universes with individual consciousness some of which are directly under the guidance of our consciousness.
