oh brother am i happy
just got a new studio set-up done (phase 1 actually) and it includes for the first time a patch bay:
http://www.samsontech.com/samson/products/processors/s-class/s-patch-plus/
for years i didn't understand the genius behind it but now i'm sold. ok, before i had a 24 cha mixing console with lots of inserts so didn't need much patching but now it really makes things so easy! no interruptions in the work flow anymore like crawling under your studio desk and behind racks or synths fighting messed up cables to make that special connections you need for the track. now i just take a couple of short patching cables and make the desired connection in a few seconds on the front of the patch bay while comfortably sitting in my studio chair
if you have any hardware efx and synths i strongly recommend one! be sure to check them out before you buy one. there are many different models with more or less options. i dig the s-patch because it has easy to use normal, half-normal and through mode operation switches on the front. something you really should have if you want to use the patch bay for different purposes.

...so any fellow enthusiasts out there?

Very nice, it does make life a lot easier if you have a lot of hardware. Someday I might get one too...           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

well, i can't really say how good samson is because i don't have a comparison. this is my 1st patch bay. from the ones i chose i think samson's patch bay is good if you compare the specs (price range up to 200€). i didn't have 800-1000€ to spend on a patch bay (that seems to be the next step upwards) so i'm happy with this one. the signal routes i've tried so far sound fine to my ears even after multiple patching (patching one sound through 2-3 hardware efx via patch bay) and the build quality is impressive at this price range. also the normal, half-normal and through switch on the front panel is a brilliant feature worth mentioning (again)...           "no one ever sweats on a plug-in" -moby
