Ok, this is my attempt to create a pinned thread.
in modern psytrance there is usually a structure that goes something like this (open to opinion!!!):
1) Intro: this can be anything from ambient pad like sounds to a taste of things to come, a lot of the time this contains a vocal sample as well to flesh out the intellectual atmosphere.
2) Post Intro: this is the part where DJ's will introduce the song to the dancefloor so it has to be a minimal approach to the beat and melody. It usually includes some of the more experimental rythmical emements.
3) The First Buildup: this section rasies the energy of the track from the intro level to something that is danceable and then stops. The elements slowly get more complex and multilayered.
4) the First Break: this section drops the energy back to the chilled out level and develops the groove to make the track funkier while slowly enancing the psycedelic nature of the leads and hits of the track.
5) the First Beat drops: the track evolves to the first full power section where the dancefloor starts to really move and feels the track. The elements gain momento and beome more complex and fulller.
6) the Second Break: this is usually a very powerful break where the artist shows off his ambient and low energy prowess and the dancefloor gets a break.
7) the Main Buildup: now it's time to really build energy on the floor and all kinds of tricks and production elements come into play here to gain a large sense of building momentum in the sound bigger than the previous sounds. Again, a vocal sample is well placed here to flesh out the intellectual ambience.
8) the Main Section: This part of the song contains the really memorable parts of the track and the bits that make you go "ooooh yeah!" Definately where you should put the "hook" if you have one. Things go nuts in this section!
9) Build Down: here's where we bring the floor down from their high and introduce some more avant garde sounds to widen their listening experience.
10) Outro: this is where the song ends. The parts all slow down and fade out, leaving another track to take it's place.
-----
Now this structure isn't the be all and end all of structures, and I advise felow artists to play with it! I just posted it to seed discussion on structual ideas.
tell me what you think, how your structure differs. I know some artists don't even think about the overall structure.
Pyramid lid.

jaws, dance music is about directing people emotionally on the dance floor. Structures are an efficient way to achieve that goal. They however should never become rigid and unquestionable dogmas. |

Nah, psytrance is like a coloring book:

Just pick a structure, get a standard synth, download the usual presets and start filling stuff in. And remember: stay within the lines
Just kidding CrunchiMonkey, i think it's a good idea to have a thread like this.
For me the best exercise for figuring out structure was to try and rebuild tracks from all kinds of music, full-on, progressive, drum & bass, pop. After a few tracks you understand the principles and you can do it on your own.

this is a good way of figuring things out!
but i wanna say that u can experiment alot with structure, try to do the unexpected ofcourse without sounding stoopid!
if u want ur stuff to sound and be interesting and at some extent unique, dont just stick to the principles!
only thing you must follow is your rythm (4/4 in most case)and your mind!

What Crunchi said is true. Todays psytrance has a defined structure, like clubtrance.
Psytrance from the 90' didn't have this kind of structure and was harder to mix. Anyway the freaks listen to psytrance with the kind of structure the know in all their cds.
If you make a song that has a different structure (like a chillout beat going in the middle of the song or changing tempo or rythm (like 3/4 etc)) can make your song very interesting to listen but not to dance..
In psytrance structure there are many structure tricks you can play with but they are always the sames...
What we should do is to improve everyone of this 10 points and make them more dynamic and give a new flow to the songs. Many artist already work on more dynamics on their songs like chaning the bass note and having two or three different melodies in a song (mabye even without a break, )

If u hear Talamsca and Nomad's "The Awakening" that's what happens ,with a 3rd melodie that just blew me up when i heard it,huge track that one.
And Quadra's "External Pleasure" a complete heaven for the senses all made with huge reverbs ,and if u hear it with headphones even better.
I get kinda sad when i hear things like that and imagine what i have to work to get to that level |

structures and rules are important.
the sooner everyone learns the rules, the sooner everyone can learn to start bending and breaking them. its like learning to crawl before you walk (or walking before you can fly... (or wake walking through your dream states))
learning how to play the beatles and smashin pumpkins on guitar before starting to compose your own stuff.
anyways, everyone feels good about themselves when they first make a track that sounds like trance. then they can really start experimenting. |
