All of these 'Mother' threads have been awesome. I think we should Sticky a few more on some of the elements of music not covered yet

I personally think PADs are a critical component of Psy-trance, it sets the mood for a track. and what about the other elements:
Fx??
Drum elements?? hats/snares/percs??
anything else?

Of course pads are critical..
I wouldn't say "sets the mood" as much as that they can control where the energy of the track is going, if that makes any sense..

I'd also agree to sticky-ing this thread...           [o m n i f o r m]

Use loads of oscillators with different pitch/octave settings, play with filter env. (long attack for nice sweeps), use synced lfo's to automate f.ex. filter cutoff or groovy effect etc...

Also try other stuff like using granulators, and play with bpm on soundsamples never considered being material for pad-construction: you can change the sound quite alot...Also offcourse remember reverb and delyas

yeah i agree omni...
i said 'sets the mood' cos i lay down pads in most of my intros.... but of course it does more than just that

yeah fraggle i constantly use both those techniques, normally have to layer at least two synths to get a nice original sound

and then of course theres chord progressions... never get tired of experimenting with that

i'm sure most of you know this but to add to the 'completeness' of this mother of all pads thread:

test absynth. you can program the crazyest pads and atmospheres with it.

here you can get the demo:
http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=absynth3_de

and until 10th september (run!), it's NI versary: you get it for about half the original price! (i'm not on their payroll )

cheers!

any tips on how to get how to get my pads to be less invasive.. i mean not masking everything so much.

with all this big verbs and delay and such, the sound gets very big.

i was thinking M/s processing, removing some fatness from the center..
Do u guys do heavy EQ modifications with pads??

? please elaborate

My pad doesn't have heavy low-end but, it practically uses the whole spectrum.
Are there some tricks to get it to sit nicely underneath my leads?

only EQ??

what to do?

Do you want to know what frequencies to put the shelf at or do you want to know what a shelf filter is ( http://www.mhsecure.com/products/ChannelStrip/Highshelfcut.png )?

It's different each time for me, but I put a shelf ~-3dB on the high end of the EQ starting around say 8kHz.

no, I was just wandering if there is any trade secret tricks on processing the pad to sit nicely.

but that helps to know that you give your pad more "air" on the EQ. thx

-strange you should mention. that's the exact idea i had.. to get my pad sitting nice in the mix then bounce to wave and gate little parts.

i try hard to avoid sounding like other artists but if it work it works

gated pads?why not try sidechaining the pad to kick or any other rythem, sutly tho.
Or using phazors then send to delay hard left n right- send to m/s processing if u want.. Use a mono maker @ 800hZ-14kz (anti phase) and send full wet reverb to throw it behind the main elements then widen the image right up.. detune, attack, maybe sum lushness from audio DAmage fluid..,mondomod, ubik....sonic toys(very good)
