Simon Posford (Hallucinogen) did OK with one. The Prodigy were happy with theirs. They still use it today!!

I do agree that they are not super transparent and the EQ on the smaller models is too basic. The pres are OK for the money. Low distortion and noise for the money.

I personally would mix in the box unless I could afford a more boutique desk. Thats just me and maybe you as well

But I just don't think we can dismiss the Mackies so quickly.

I thought Simon was on a Soundcraft?           http://www.myspace.com/fragletrollet

He may be now. Someone posted up a You tube link with him talking about his set up. I am pretty sure it was the Mackie 32/8. The soundcraft mixers usually quite different, colour coded knobs etc.

My point is though, If you think that a Mackie (32/8) mixer is going to hold you back when it comes to Psy I would say that's a little out of perspective. I wouldn't want to run an orchestral piece through it. But for most electronic music it will suffice. You probably won't be able to match Kraftwerk but then they had a much bigger budget!!!!

Personally I think you can do better in the box at the OP's price point. Get some decent converters and a few pres if you need them. Go for UAD for your EQ and dynamics. (just an example).

Might be. I'd never buy a mixer before I could afford something better. Whats the point of mixing on a board when every eq move degrades your sound, and the board adds background hiss? This experience is from the Onyx 16/4.

I can't speak for the newer Mackie products. But many good albums were produced on the older ones. I also would rather wait until I could afford something better. I would love to get a Cranesong Spider. But as I have access to an Otari console as well as several Audient asp8024's then I just don't need to. Even then I can get very similar results in the box with a couple of bits of outboard anyway.

When people say "but a zillion records where released with the mackie 24-8 and the 32-8..", I say imagine those recordings with a good sounding mixer instead!

It's harsh and cold sounding and the EQ really suck (worst I ever tried).
I recently got rid of my 32-8 and got a old amek bcII instead, the difference is like night and day. And the price only double.

Before the mackie I had a soundcraft spirit studio 24-8 which does sound very nice and has a great EQ too.
But it was very noisy which the mackie isn't. That is mackies strongest part...no noise!

I heard so much good about the 8 buss series and wanted one for a while but got very dissapointed.

Go for quality! It pays of in the end and some of the old 80's monster desks go for decent prices today.

I agree with Fraggle, if I buy a mixer it is only when I have the necessary $ for it, as far as analog is concerned my choice would be SSL, digital I would choose a c/24.           Upavas - Here And Now (Sangoma Rec.) new EP out Oct.29th, get it here:

``tree`` or ``treelion`` or ``poop`` or ``shit`` are real numbers.
