What are some of the top mixers for bouncing down and running your tracks through? What are some really amazing analog mixers?

no of course not.

high quality analogue mixer cost a lot of money, that's just how it is. If you get the track count down then you might be able to get closer to better quality.

You could look at a Mackie but you can get better results in the box. My Mackie is only used for live sound now. Much better results in the box and when you go analogue you will want some outboard as well. Allen and heath mix wizard is quite nice, better sound than the Mackie IMO but they do get called Allen & grief.

Dont bother with Mackie.

Allen & Heath have a very reasonably priced "in-line" mixer (isnt this what they call the mixers we want?) called Zed R-16.
You get 16 really nice preamps, 16 really clean eq's on the the 16 channels. You can flip each channel into a midi-fader, thus choose if you want to mix itb/otb. It also has inbuilt FW-interface.

Next step up the ladder would be something like a Toft ATB, but remember then you have to pay out for 16-32 channels of converters... quickly adding on the cost!

The Allen & Heath zen range do appear well specified.

I have had bad experiences so maybe find a good dealer. Thomann do a 3 year warranty free with many products.

Why not?

Alot of good music has been made on Mackie desks., especially the 32/8 and 24/8

Just because in my ears they sound bad... the eq's are brittle, the preamps are dirty etc...
The sound basicly just sounds worse after a run through :S

Simon Posford (Hallucinogen) did OK with one. The Prodigy were happy with theirs. They still use it today!!

I do agree that they are not super transparent and the EQ on the smaller models is too basic. The pres are OK for the money. Low distortion and noise for the money.

I personally would mix in the box unless I could afford a more boutique desk. Thats just me and maybe you as well

But I just don't think we can dismiss the Mackies so quickly.

My buddy has a mackie mixer, its not bad, but its not great either. I def want something with good preamps and eq. I just ordered a RME Fireface 400 and I def want a good mixer for it. How good is Behringer?

There not. If you don't think Mackie are up to it then I would forget about Behringer.

True. Whats your opinion on the RME Fireface 400 compared to the Apogee Duet? What would be the sound quality difference? I'm pretty much strictly using the audio interface for mixing purposes generally. Do you think its a waste of money to keep the Fireface instead of using the Apogee? I'm thinking I could get a mixer and maybe a quality compressor with the extra $1200. What do you think? Also, whats some really nice compressors for around $500?
