Does it not allow you to insert a meter onto the track?

nah, he doesnt need them..
in ableton session view, when u open a mixer chanell, widen it up a bit if its too narrow and highten in up, than u will see numbers on the left of the "LED display", upper number is max dB of the track and lower number is the volume u can type in or change with the slider.. same goes for master channel..

however, no matter what dB it says u shouldnt mess with the master channel slider, its a rule u already broke.. dunno how your intuition works but mine tells me if u move it u cant see the peaks at zero, meaning there is no use of master fader..           http://www.facebook.com/xrayzproductions

You must be able t read the peak though? Surely you can do that in Ableton.

With regards to the master fader....I'll try and explain, but to be honest I have read so many things on forums that I am not 100% sure in my head what is right.

Some people suggest that you have a lot of headroom internally with some DAWs as the wrok with the audio in 32bit float, even if it is a 24bit 0r 16 bit file. Basically it reads it off the drive and process it in 32bit float mode. This is apparently still 24 bit audio but the float allows 8 bits of scaling either way so you can bring a fader down and still have good resolution. With out this very low fader positions will become low bit. Apparently this will also give extra headroom in the internal bus. And if all your plug ins are 32 bit float then apparently it is hard to clip the internal bus. But obviously you can clip at the master if you don't bring the fader down. If you do this and bounce then you should in theory not clip. As long as you give that cushion and don't go to near 0dB. Some mastering houses recommend -6dBfs as a limit.

The problem I personally have with this way of working is that I think it is asking for trouble. Why risk clipping internally? What if you have a 24bit plugin? you clip. I use Protools LE which is 32 bit float, and well if I take something to 0dB I get a clip light on that track. I am sure I can hear it as well. So something doesn't seem quite right there. I was wondering if the extra 8bit scaling was only utilized at the bottom end of the dynamic range. Digital Audio is quite a big subject and involves alot of maths. Not my strong point. But for me none of the above matters.........

Because....

There is a shit load of dynamic range available. You don't have to risk clipping. The noise floor isn't an issue like with tape. I personally keep the master fader at 0. When tracking a band I will aim for around -10dBfs peaks. When recording of a synth or bouncing a synth down I try not to go over -6dBfs.

I am not clipping on recording. I am not clipping on plugins. I a not clipping anywhere. I haven't sacrificed anything. IF you start balancing your mix with your kick first I would say aiming for around -10dBFS on the master is a good place to start.
