Ive just reado some old posts about performing live, since im preparing some of my tracks in order to rhearse what would be my live set.
Maybe by each one adding new opinions on how to perform live would be great, so far i've just splitted my tracks into loops, i really dont want to bounce a track and play with some synth, rather to play with loops and improvise and somethimes play with some synth. This is my idea but im about to start to i would really live to read about how u do it specially with ableton live. thanks and hope someone cares |

Well..this is just my point of view..but if i where you..i would get used to the session view thing..with follow actions on scenes..check out my tutorial on my website..
http://www.dark-zlime.de.tl
its on the left under ableton live..
if you got that sorted..make 8bar loops of your tracks..and place them as clips in sesion view..
route all of them to send only..and crate at least 3 seperate return tracks..one for Kick/Bass or even one for kick and one for bass.. one percussion and one for synth..ok..now place an fx rack on all of them returns and ad some filterdealys to it...maybe 4 or 5 in each rack..you can trigger the on/off via your drum pads on your your midicontroller..well..thats the basic thing i would work...sure can prepare some clips that you can throw in when you want..triggert by your controller..do program changes to save cpu..
automate your leadsounds or whatever with your potis..and there you go..just develop on that..thats what i do..the more precise you mangle the filter delays..the more fun you will achieve..get used to racks..and even drum racks in live 7..there you cann add your single bassnotes of every track and create one big session..same with kicks..etc..
godd luck!!

i separated two one track into loops, 1 turned 20 loops and the other 13 loop tried groping as much as possible, i got
basslines
leads
percs
fx
1shot synths
etc...
From there u must figure out how to trigger them, but what confuses me is that i end up having tons of clips.

I've always wondered how one uses Ableton. Lets say they've produced their track in Cubase, would they then export each track to a different file and then use Ableton to trigger each one whenever necessary? |

but "live" looping sounds terrible
no edits no breaks no nothing
it sounds like unfinished track
i got all my loops ready and try that ableton looping system - didnt work so great - if one wants to call it "live" and feel happy sure why not but it sounds far from good like studio edits
(also it goes for artists i saw preform with it)
its not that its impossible i know , but for me ableton is joke and if thats as far it goes i rather dj my own tunes and have nord to make wawawa fx on top and its better way of presenting my own stuff as well making the extra channel with hands (live inough?) and can choose the track order - much better then ready set on laptop - which still called more live then me since they have laptop and not cds , so i got my laptop now i dont even need nord i can make wawawa fx from vst and its working good!
and to all smartass who want the playbak to be from laptop too get over yourself cd is more safe and reliable www.sattelbattle.com

what you can try is to work with patterns insteed of loops with separated sounds , built some pattern like intro , beat intro , break 1,break 2,break 3... with some pattern of 32 bars it sould work well ,that way your track is never exaclty the same when you play it and you can add new patterns when you want to make a track of 30 minutes for example.
a good idea is to work as usual to make a track ,when it s finished you cut it in patterns and start from there to built the live . |

well for those who only uses it for playback, its a ticket to play 24 bit instead of 16 bit. I Dont know how noticeable it is, i didnt test on huge system/read of this.
I use my laptop for plackback of much of my proects, but with insert effects on a lot of channels, and with a lot midi streaming to my virus ti for realtime tweaking, and last, midi tracks with presets for improvising. Then the empty tracks just got the name of the presets i prepared for playing (the virus loads 16 at a time, so i have to load more in after the first ones are over). works pretty well for me

yes i wish i could have TI now and prepare presets
it is better then the nord+cds just from all the options in the TI , but once i have my laptop on board its ok i can add midi lines on the synth (tho sync only by ear , but usualy it works just fine)
and best insert fx are on pioneed dj equip.. hehe
i dont see still any advantage play the tracks from laptop , specialy with mp3 quality of ableton (sorry dudes listen to ableton and then winamp tell me what sound better)
24 bits ? in theory only. i rather play 16 bit with proffessional mastering rather then 24bit home version.
btw its not that i feel i miss something .. im pritty happy with playing my original tunes , go crazy with fx , and add synth sounds in real time.. thats ok for me and i never asked any one to add "live" or "lively" , but i also wont make then not to , since its defintly not my dj set (where i only dj with minimum fx and no addonds at all and mostly other peaples music)
and beside its x10 more then have ready mix and hit spacebar and look cool , if i dont move stuff and do things it very quickly will be silent..also i tried to make my live better and wasted my money on midi guitar that does not make the job good inough , if it would i had the best live around hehe.. time to learn the god damm keys allready

I agree with the elad about "no edits no breaks no nothing" but i also think that ableton can do wonders... so far i slitted al into loops incluiding breaks and im practicing re-building a song live maybe by addding some fx, changing a little from the normal track..the issue here istaht it takes more clips/tracks and some good midi controllers is needed.
As an option while figuring out how to do a proper"live set" with ableton i considered using deckandance to mix my tracks as dj set and allows to use vsti's so the synth playing is solved. |
