Lead at 2:47, any suggestions?

I thought finding a piano sound similar to this and adding a reverb would do but then I tried using the Sylenth1 and got a little close to it with arpeggiator, some chorus, some reverb and slight compression.

Any more ideas on how to perfect this sound? It really sounds beautiful.

There is no rules to what you do to make a lead.. So what ever number of notes you use. If it sounds good it sounds good!

FM is a method of synthesizing. Regular usually means subtractive synthesis. So it is another method to create sound.

Do make sure it fits the scale you choose for the track.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

There are no rules for making melodies.. well, actually there are rules, and they are meant to be broken. Either ways, it's your job to figure it out, learn your own perception of music theory and apply it.
You can actually do what ever you want! Just one condition: you must like it. However, if you listen to some Psy you can find a whole bunch of examples of completely different things that work out to be killer leads. You've got simple 3 note (same note as bassline) during during 4 beats, you have people who cram as many notes as possible, you have leads with no note but just a screltch / noise sound.. everything is good.

As a tip: thing about harmony and melody, think about melody and rhythm. Think about what you are doing, about scales and notes and why you are doing something, and most importantly think of how to break those rules on purpose. (as an example, lots of musicians will say you must keep to the music scale, while God laughs. It sure sounds good, but man you can make it sound great by both obeying and disobeying the rules..). Also, try to make thing move / change over time, with automations and what-so-ever -> this can bring a huge organic touch to a digital sound.

You can play also with an arpeggiator (will make the things easier). If you are in ableton try arpeggiator and chord (really nice comp with decent results )
Put some fx like delay, reverb, chorus maybe a flanger, play with the lfo -> filter and glide - portameno and experiment with these stuff.

Do you have any knowledge about music theory? at least the basics?

If not...Start with simple stuff:

Drop some notes in piano roll with the first note same key with the bass and experiment.

Maybe some midi files will be help you...

Good luck

I'd say it's a sawtooth with a bandpass filter and pitch modulation, but the key is the distortion. If you get that going in Sylenth and add Clip distortion with Amount and Drive turned all the way up, you can get some searing leads going.           www.facebook.com/chemogen
