Both stationary and portable. So, whats your opinions on portable pc's? I'm considering buying this one:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2.0 GHz, 4 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB)
17" Wide Screen WXGA+(1440x900)
2048MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)
160GB (5,400 rpm) Sata Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-RW drive
256MB DDR ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 graphics card, PCI-Express x16
Primært 9-celle 80 WHr batteri

Its a Dell Inspiron 9400. The specs and price is ok, but Ive heard that Dell is a nono for DAW's?

dell is a nono for daws? i made good experiences with dell, even playing live.

256MB DDR ATI® MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 graphics card, PCI-Express x16
i dont think that you gonna need that.

you should start to think about the right audio-interface. something like maudio for example, stable and cheap.

and if you order on dell, dont buy the service-default setting, because you can have it for 200€ less.

anyway. this setting is pretty strong!

Man i don't know who comes up with this crap about Dell's being bad for making music..I've been through 4 different laptops over the years, all Dell with various generation processors & never had a problem with any of them..

The specs you mention are pretty good, i would just suggest you get a 7200 rpm hard disk as its much better for working with audio..Some sequencers also recommend getting a 7200 rpm harddisk, it will make a difference when you play back audio tracks..

Another thing whatever you get make sure you get the processor that has 4MB L2 cache, it'll make a difference in the plugins you can load..

P.S Sorry to disagree with you Kitnam, m-audio's might be cheap, but they're certainly not reliable..At least not the firewire one's! I ditched my firewire audiophile for the very same reason..

Was thinking about a Emu 1616 (PCMCIA) or Focusrite Saffire, both with some in-built DSP power...

And yeah, I was thinking that Dells would do the same job as any PC on the market... anyone know what firewire-chips they use? I've heard that Texas Instruments chips are the best, but I obviously "hear" alot

Dont buy the 1616 for its effects, in my opinion they arent that good, the only thing i use them for is to give some reverb to the monitoring when im recording vocals.

but the soundquality of the card itself is very good!

If you're gonna go with the Emu make sure you get the 1616m as its got better converters..

I've read some positive reviews of it too have no personal experience with it though..           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

I havent heard the non M version, but the word on the street is go for the M.
Im very happy with the soundquality of the card, when recording in 24 bits i leave plenty headroom to prevent from clipping, and have no noise problems.
It has RIAA preamp for decks, two mic preamps that are quite nice (dont colour the sound, and good gain), it has two midi in and two midi out, total six analog in and same out, plus headphones out on the breakout box and pcmcia card. Headphones out are very loud, carefull!!!

Build quality is not the best, heard about some units failing, but they have been quick to replace those.

It has a mixer/routing software that is very good and flexible, you can route signals anywhere, set up external effects, monitor mixes, and everything you can think of.

Low latency, decent stability of drivers, only problem is if i leave my sequenser open without doing anything for a couple hours (like making some food and watching a movie) it can freeze. Never had this problem while i am working on the machine though, so i just save before i leave the machine.
