Any misc. tips and tricks for Cubase should be gathered together here, what might seem simple to you could be a lifesaver for someone else.
Inserting a Track FX onto a MIDI track you can automatically change the scale and key of what you're playing, helps for playing a set range of keys but getting a different output.
Lets keep on adding to this. |

i will mention again the smart hotkey setup
u can build your own short cuts includ anything - i use alot for offline effects so i dont have to browse the list for my usual delay/reverb/eq/compresssor
also reverse , bounce , export mixdown , import audio file , and anything usefull insteat mouse clicks 100's of times and browsing lists and menu's

Hm..working with Group Tracks makes live much easier..like one Kick/bass in mono one stereo drums and one stereo synth and maybe an fx group as well..then like elad mentioned..the shortcuts for your personal workflow..for example i got the three mixers on Ö Ä # in the first i got only the audiotracks displaed in the second i got my Vsti tracks and in the third i got only group tracks and fx returns..then folder tracks in arrangement view for sure and markers every 8 bars as well..everything set to musical mode..so when you change the tempo the regions will follow..and even to create one template song with most basic stuff prepared in advance..like some groups/folders/fx tracks and i even got an pre organized battery for drums..
nice thread!

this is exactly what i do, then i can tweak with a tiny bit of compression and eq etc, on the stem tracks, and not have to bounce the whole stem down to see what its like with some comp and EQ
Mtzz i hope ur using those group inside folder tracks, coz if u are u can minimize them, into the seperate stems, leaving what looks like only 4 audio tracks, its a lot easier, coz if there is one bit of percussion u want to change then u just open the percussion folder and viola
when i figured this out, it was the best thing since i figured out what LFO means
another tip which helps quite a lot for me, is when inserting instrument into the VST rack, always leave many spaces inbetween, so if u want to add one of the same vst's it wont have to be at the bottom of the rack if u get what im saying i usually only start on the 4th line, and leave about 3 spaces before putting in my bass synth. it just helps to keep everything organized, theres nothing worse than workin on a messy track.
i also do this with sends and inserts, i never ocuppy the first 2 or 3 so that if need be i can always pop sumthing in before it

Hey Glitch,
yer i actualy got a bunch of folder tracks..like one its called All ..inside this there are two more Audio and Midi and inside them there are Drums/Synth and Bass folderswith already prepared midi tracks..for start up..great thing to work with..
the actual groups are in a seperate folder wich is created automaticaly..
the thing with folders is really nice..like if you want to cut all your drums at a specific part f.e. then you just have to cut the folder and stuff like that..
since Cubase 4 there is no need to take care of free slots in Inserts..you can just move or copy them/same with fx tracks....but in the rack its quite helpful to leave spaces..thats a good way.
one thing that really bugs me..is the new arranger track in c4..where you can set up arrange loop parts wich you can make as big as you wnt..f.e. 8 bars and trigger them with the mouse in the inspector..but it would really be cool if it would be possible to trigger those parts via midi..but its still not implemented..you can only automate a previews part or next..and that not very cool so..hope that comes one day..
enjoy!:)

yer i had a close look in generic control setup..and the only parameters that you can midi learn are previews part/next part first and last part and activate..so thats not quite proffesional i think..would be really nice to use keyboard buttons for that...i already posted this in the cubase forum and the moderators even wonder why this is not possible..cannot think of any other way..hm
maybe with the standart markers...i will have a look now..

Ok..so far the only thing i could find is in generic control is in the lower window(sure) command then transport..there you got several options like jump to cycle marker or jump to marker..but there are not all displayed..just the first 9 markers are automatable..will ask in Cubase Forum..

Quick Controls for Cubase 5:
If you're having trouble mapping your controller to a VST or mixer setting in Cubase, try this.
On a track's inspector window (For instance, a midi track going to Albino) press the last tab labeled quick controls.
This will bring up 8 slots you can add assignments to.
Click the first slot (1) and you should see a whole bunch of parameters you can control. Like Albino's filter cut-off.
Once you've selected a parameter you can tweak it by mouse with the fader that appears under the slot.
Or, if you have a MIDI Controller you can go to Devices -> Device Setup -> Remote Device Controllers -> Quick Controls.
Now you'll able to assign controls on your MIDI controller to a respective Quick Controls slot you made on your track.
To do this, click the control you want to assign (in this case, the first one), tweak a knob/fader on your controller and hit Learn. Repeat this for all the Quick Controls you want to assign to your controller.
I just learnt about this a few days ago and makes a big difference to my workflow, I'm yet to see how deep it can go, though.

for intense drum or whatever rolls (might take some time but you can end up with cool results)
take for exampe kickdrum
clone it CTRL + D
make the wave file shorter
clone again
make wave file shorter
clone again etc....
till the point you want!
also you can clone many times then make shorter
then clone many times again then make longer, again clone many times, make shorter, clone ect
will be a bit out time but nice fill!
been using a lot latley as got bored of very synced sounding drum fills!
also good alternative to the more usual sounding bounce and pitchenvelope rise stuff!
EDIT
turn the snap or quantize or whatever off! http://www.myspace.com/capitaneuskirk |
