i live in edmonton, alberta, canada and it is hard to find the owens corning 700 series insulation here. there is a company called Roxul though. they make acoustical fire batts (AFB) that have similar densities as the owens corning products. just a tip if you have trouble finding it...

http://www.owenscorning.com/
search for "3825 O/C Acoustic Wall Guide"
here i compare these coefficient tables from their brochures.
ASTM C423 CO-EFFICIENTS AT FREQUENCIES
(hopefully the formatting works here)
owens corning 705 plain, 4” thick
125Hz 250Hz 500Hz 1000Hz 2000Hz 4000Hz NRC
0.75---1.19---1.17----1.05-----0.97-----0.98----1.10
Roxul AFB 4" thick
125Hz 250Hz 500Hz 1000Hz 2000Hz 4000Hz NRC
0.86---1.11---1.20----1.07-----1.08-----1.07----1.10
as you can see they are basically the same stuff. |

hmm, i think there is always a reflection from walls, and if your volume is that low, mixing is senseless anyway, because you are not hearing what you are doing.

Interesting read about the helmholtz resonator. I see them very much as the last link in the chain, as they only target very specific frequencies. |

Bingo. Broadband absorbtion for general treatment (ie, to cut down on the bass overall) and then, for problem frequencies, use of a helmholtz resonator.

but if you work in proffessional conditions (83DB i think?) its not low volume at all.. and is essential to work like this get balanced mix.. so u want to have those acoustics candy

Agreed - for proper balance you need to give the song a listen at loud volumes. But you don't have to always be listening loudly (like if you're programming a synth or drum etc). Just turn it up when you're focused on mixing a section.
Don't forget to take lots of ear breaks.
And at this volume only have the song playing when you need it, not constantly. |

You could mix lower if you like. 75dB SPL is fine. The loudness contours of our hearing are still almost as linear as at 85dB SPL. The advantage is that you don't drive the room modes as much at the lower level. Oh and of course fatigue. |
