Although I haven't tried it I can pretty much bet that the RME PCMCIA solution is the most stable.
Otherwise MOTU firewire interfaces is very reliable indeed.
Myself i use a magma PCMCIA-PCI box so i can use my beloved pulsar pulsar card on the go.
Although working very well, it's sure not the most super efficient drivers, and quite an expensive solution but makes a great difference for my productions comapred to if I had to use only VSTi's.

@alex
in case you didn't know, it stands for:
Unreliable Shit Buss
It's maybe ok for transferring some picture from a little digital camera, but time sensitive stuff like audio it seemes plauged with problems.
Some products work fine sometimes, but i've seen enough problems with both soundcards, midi interfaces and external disk to stay well clear of anything USB to be on the safe side.
Personally I avoid any USB devices and disable USB in the BIOS to avoid it timeslicing my CPU checking for new devices.

Then i guess i'm one of the few lucky guys that their USB soundcard is 100% reliable and stable. |

digidesign for laptops ... hum to much expensice choice ...
RMe via firewire .. and collina odd i disagree with u when u say that USB2 is generally fine; higher bandwidth than Firewire... is the same .. 400 mhz
but its bether firewire than usb .. since it a different type of transmission the speed is the same but ... the advantages are bether in firewire .. is so why most of the ppl get firewire stuff
motu mk2 .. RME .. for pcmcia or firewire |

Enough bandwidt is not equal to good performance.
As long the bandwidth is enough to transport the number of channels in the resolution you are using that is a non-concern.
Sure the bandwidth is enough on USB, but the implementation does not seem very good for time sensitive applications.
I tried cd-writers, mouses, harddrives and midi-interfaces using both USB and USB2 and none of the devices i tried has worked really well.
I'm sure there is plenty of people using USB sucessfully and that i just had unusually bad experience, but it don't seem like a well implemented format suitable for audio applications to me.
PCMCIA and firewire has always worked well for me on the other hand.
