the only reason i love psytrance is the melody/and music behind it makes it much much beter than any other techno.
Some psy has excellent music composition in it. I could care less about that 4*4 kick repetitions.
With the melody you can tell a story.
I sometimes use drumsticks and just play on the floor (or bed or something) over the music to get an idea of what to do with precussion on the song.
Use louder and softer parts\notes and swing to create some groove.

Also one nice trick you can try is theth you play your melody on one synth to get the sound thet you want. Then load 1-2-3 as you wish synths more and cut some notes from firs and past on second then cut other notes or even whole octave range and paste on the other synths. Kind of layering i guess. You can also try to play some realy long notes and sidechain them to snare or kick. You have as much choise as you want to have it.
Never let computers to win a game! :)

word. i was very impressed when i first heard him. i wrote more thoughts here and all terrafractyl-related discussions can continue there, so as not to go all OT on this thread:

becktrank, so it seems like you are talking about the "groove" and the "rhythm" more, rather than melody. so what i wrote previously is not really on point, as far as what you were really asking.
i can suggest two approaches for you. one, is to forget synths for a while and concentrate strictly on your percussion. try to make kind of tribal psy. just load 32 drum samples (lots of bongos, toms, triangles) into battery or whatever and try to make a track with nothing but kick, bass, and percussion. this way you won't be overwhelmed with sound synthesis and just work strictly on placement and velocities. listen to some Shadow Fx for some inspiration. there's hardly any melodies, but tons (and i do mean, tons) of percussion layered and going in and out. how he manages to keep it all together and controlled and not sound like a complete mess is beyond me.
another approach is to prepare some material BEFORE you start working on a track. just pick a tempo. load your favorite synth that you know better than others. and just start making noise. the idea here is to work quickly and as soon as you hear something interesting, export it as a wave, and then start again. make 20-30 sounds and sequences. short and long. then try to arrange 5 or 6 of them over the course of 4 bars. see how they interact together. once you spend some time with this, you'll see what works and what doesn't. and you'll probably be able to synthesize the "missing pieces" once you have something going and feel like something specific is missing.
then, naturally, combine the two approaches. see if this helps.

I'd love to see how Shadow fx produces his tracks.
It must be very cool to have the ability to create endless interesting rolls, sweeps and buildops, just with percussion and some fx. |

Any advice on using arpeggios? Like do you guys go straight root, third, fifth, seventh,etc,... how do you come up with interesting patterns? Do you play them by hand and edit afterward? Or is it all piano-roll clicking? I suck at incorporating arpeggios, everything I make with them sounds academic and cheezy. |

In my opinion, what makes a great psy tune (for me) is ones that have leads, sound fx, ect...that all lead into eachother or compliment/effect eachother in some way seamlessly, and if you take the kick and bass out it will sound like all the leads and stuff are having a conversation with eachother, or arguing. Prime example, Ace ventura |
