Maybe you just need practice, I thought the vb-1 was an all time fav in the psy scene?!? The key is layering and not using presets, it's best to start from the ground up, commonly known as the "house building approach".

but disco, to check rendering engines, shouldn't we all use the same plugins, then use the same mastering plugin?

Don't look at this as a competition of which sounds best, as for example I am sure one can get better results than me, making a tune in Fruity Loops if they know their stuff, but I thought it would be an informative thread of each DAW's sound quality, as I am positive they are all equally great, the "big" ones anyway.

Right then, the last Cubase VS Ableton thread made me think about making a tune using nothing but the native plug ins of your sequencer.
Obviously we can use samples from our sampler libraries, yet use your sequencer's native sampler, if you are not simply dropping the audio in teh arrangement.
Use the native soft synths, reverbs, EQs, compressors, delay, modulation FX...whatever of your DAW and mix and master the tune in there, again using only native plug ins in the mastering chain.
Would you say a -10RMS is good as a level for the mastering? Obviously not as close as commercial releases but something to make things a bit loud, yet not overcompress things and keep a "natural" sound to get an idea of things without them being heavily processed. Keeping an even level, would be better for comparing clips, besides the fact that I can't get much louder than -10RMS without making my mixes sound like shite
I'll go first using Logic 8.
Made the kick from scratch using Ultrabeat, ES1 for the bassline.
All leads were made using the ES2.
Percussion sounds are entirely from the Apple Loops library that comes with Logic 8.

Peace out.

First of all cheers for the kind words, Cosma was for me Israel's best export in the trance scene.
As for making things wide, Logic has a plug in called stereo spread that sounds pretty good. I don't use that on main leads and such, but use it for background stuff.
As for making the leads sound distant, I don't really understand which ones you are talking about, some of them are "in your face" (or at least I intended them to be), but generally I also use the "long reverb, not much top end, lower in dB" approach as well. The thing is you need to find the right reverb, or always tweak the early reflection time/level, especially on long lush reverbs, before you get to the tail part. Just a hint of delay before the tail comes in allows you to get away with more apparent dry sound AND reverb without loosing your leads in the mix.
That is my approach anyway.

cubase has a ton of great synths. I will take this challenge!!!!!
I have to take back my words.
As I was actually talking about the older Cubase versions, which really didn't have much quality synths.
But Cubase 5 is actually very reasonable, checking out the synths right now.

Right then, still in the mixdown process... I have a new mix, "work in progress 1.1" which I believe is more "open" and is pretty much the final mix.
As suggested, gave the kick a bit more click, though took it down half a dB, as well as the bassline by 0.8 dB (which I might be turning up again, suggestions welcome).

well, had to search some while to come back here and now laying back with a bottle of nice wine i have to say....
killing mate, exactly the way i had in mind. well done !!!!! thanks you did it and put this up. ass shaking brother, loving it. bass is matter of taste i guess. would give it maybe about 0.3db more or around like that, but working well.
to me the click of the kick disappeared during some parts of the track, could have been soundcloud or the level of hatz and other highs, anyways really working well and nice flow in it with lots of space and atmosphere.

thanks for the kind words mate. will look into what is covering the click of the kick, some of my leads are a touch too bright overall me thinks, bit of EQing and higher ratio on the sidechain compressor should sort things.
I'm definitely gonna touch the bassline fader up a bit, for a second version and have a listen to both versions on different speakers. I think I might have reduced it too much for this mix.
Glad you enjoyed the music. Much more of that with the second album coming out next week, fingers crossed.

Logic 8 tune V1.2. Re-tuned the kick and altered the bass patch a bit as well as added some higher side chain ratio to certain leads and slightly EQed some of the leads' top end --->
