What makes it sad is that two of my all time favourites are in there, No Woman No Cry by Bob Marley and Let It Be by The Beatles.

Because you thought that those great masterpieces were a little bit more complicated than that?
It's like finding out for the first time that 50% of Shpongle is sampled
Doesn't make it any less better though.

Comparing shpongle to Bob Marley and The Beatles is blasphemy and yes you're right earlier work of shpongle is containing a lot of sampled material. Just check the "Spiritual Voices" cd and you have all the vocals needed to make a bootleg album

Comparing Shpongle to Bob Marley and The Beatles is blasphemy in what way? As disrepect to Raja and Simon or disrepect to Bob and the Beatles?
I never really get why people like the Beatles so much :\ overhyped + overexaggerated imo
Who cares who samples what? Are you going to say that Smack My Bitch Up isn't completely kickass because it is made up of a bunch of samples?

Why is that?
Because The Beatles and Bob were active in the 60's and they are considered classic?
So what? They were the best in their genre, and so is Shpongle. I believe that the comparison is valid.

I have a simple model that predicts how much a person is likely to be into The Beatles. Two variables (both negative):
- How far your age is from 60
- How far you are from Liverpool
With your values in those two variables, it’s not at all surprising that you are not too much of a fan.

Why do so many people buy into the Spongle hype, I personally don't like their music at all, there are plenty artists out there I do like, but Spongle... hell no ! I mean wtf???

Because they make kick ass music?
Just like someone said that Beatles are great, and another one said they didn't - some will like Shpongle while others would not.
I'm sure that there are people who like your music while other dislike it.
Nothing to be too excited about.

My own personal feelings about Shpongle notwithstanding, I have gotten more 'holy shit, this music is fucking incredible and I've never heard anything like it before' comments from non-psytrance people when I play Shpongle than from any other artist. Not that the reaction of the uninitated is the end-all-be judgement of how good music is...
Regardless if you like the music or the vibe or not - I can't imagine how anyone in this scene could not appreciate the production values, sound design and musicianship of the Shpongle project.
I have learned so much about sound, rythym, panning, arrangement, storytelling from them its just insane - not to mention incredibly powerful altered states When I'm tripping solo and just have shuffle going on my ipod and it happens across a Shpongle track...something magical happens....

You're right. They would be a great first glimps into the psy music for somebody who never heard of it. I don't know why in my case it had to be a release from Mechanical Dragon followed by CPC's "Subliminal Messages". A joke by Fate, I guess. |
