For sure Xenomorph gets my vote... he's the only artist that freaked me out and scared the crap out of me when I saw him play for the first time.
The old Horror place stuff was genuinely creepy, not so much the newer stuff from what i've heard.
Also, old Bug Funk was pretty damn creepy too...
And of course the old Tim Schuldt stuff, I'm a sucker for children singing in a creepy way.
I do agree the horror movie sampling thing has gotten quite old, however there's a lot of the new generation that doesn't really understand how to make a real atmosphere like that, they just take from movies because it's easy and they feel that the end will justify the means...
Don't get me wrong, I've even been guilty of using movie soundscapes too when I can't get what exactly I'm looking for, however there's nothing more fun than putting a bunch of unrelated sounds together to create a strange ambience....

na ... gappeq isnt dark at all .. rite machine ..great techy track ..album is also nice but u can hardly call it spooky / creepy vibe stuff .. xeno (old stuff) ..remains in my book the only real dark music .. creepy evil stuff .. of the new lot ..celsung and catatonic despair fit the bill ..but lack the magic

This guy and his groups, Neurosis and Tribes of Neurot create some of the richest darkness I have heard in music...
Some of the black metal guys can make some pretty dark soundscapes as well... Crebain and Xasthur come to mind.
There is also the noisy side of things with Sunn O)))
Psytrance never really stays dark, even throughout a track having some dark parts, it never seems to stick to the subject. Just flashy dark bits to freak out the acid heads like someone said earlier in this thread...
I never found anything of Xenomorph or The Delta to be truly creepy or scary. It definitely seemed like they were going for that, but never really pulled it off between the 4/4 structure and trance melodies. I guess it was brooding in a techy, almost industrial sort of way. Industrial was always something I viewed as trying it's hardest to be dark, but just being way too lame to be taken seriously. I think alot of it's detractors view darkpsy in this way as well... |

Pondscum's just deliciously twisted. Dark to me needs classical stlye gothic melody or maybe just screaming sounds or a mixture of both. |
