Just curious about what has been the most difficult thing to learn and why?
For me I think it has to do with mixing, using compressors and sometimes the flow of the track. Still struggling with this and melody writing sometimes...
This stuff (eq/comp) is something easy to understand but very difficult to master IMHO

I find the arrangement of a track a bit difficult some times.
I guess thats what you refeer to as "the flow of the track". I havent really finished a track, and said to myself; This is perfet. It's hard to that, when you want it all perfect. haha.
I must admit, im not very experienced with music production at all (2-3 years). As time goes and i travel to new areas of the production world, i always get something new, and more difficult on my mind. I dont always see music production as a funny game, But when i finally master a new method "perfectly" i go to the next.
I got so much to learn, before i see myself as a good music producer. It will take years. But i see that as the fun part!

for me bringing the track from the "ok" level to where I am "really happy" with it is the hardest. This entails tuning all the compressors, fine tuning FX, getting all the reverse and glitched kicks sounding right.
Usually I burn out on listening to the song before I get it to where I want it and just call it good for a few weeks then return to it.
all this being said i imagine the "hardest" thing to learn I have not actually learned yet... as that one would be the hardest --

mixing and flow for me. eq and compressor gets easier with experience, but reverb and especially loudness levels give me a headache sometimes. i guess decent monitors would be a good investment flow is the most difficult. how many ideas can i put into a track without it sounding like a collage of multiple tracks? do the sections REALLY fit together? that epic melody fits perfect at minute 3, but where should the track go if the most energetic part is in the first half? ....

lets just call it... "having the lights turn on"

I find it most difficult to make everything in the track have its own place, still have a great mix and flow. I can usually fit in the single elements but to make everything work together without getting totally bored with the track is difficult.
Also I am never 100% pleased with the sounds when the track is finished... There is always things to improve. That gets frustrating every now and then..

would you agree if I said that psytrance is harder to make than many other genres? Because the complexity it requires to make something that barely stands against what is out there. (ok not drum n bass or IDM but a lil bit than your everyday tech house track)
It's more or less easy for me to come up with an OK track... but to make it really shine like the stuff I admire, man that's hard... specially since is not about a single point but the overall process of composing and producing an industry standard psychedelic trance track (suomi not included xD)
Good thing is I do feel improvement in my sounds but man it has taken a while (and I'm not quite there yet)... this thing is asking for my entire devotion, my life. And it has it.

Percussion!
writing melodies or creating flow is manageable but creating really good flowing and progressing(!) percussion is nearly impossible for me. don't know why but i always end up in loopitis when creating percussion. didn't find THE interface for me to programm "interesting" percussion.
so after 2 years i've given up now and just listen to psytrance only

Oh man percussion can be really frustrating but you gave up... really? Percussion is a very tricky part but if you listen carefully and learn to layer your loops it can become something natural... learn some drumming it can help too. Analyze commercial loops, tap on the table, repeat it with your mouth, learn what makes others percussion so tasty.
Feel free to add me on skype, my username is aciduss I could throw some stuff on percussion that has really helped me.
boom.

last time i started ableton live was in december i guess ... so frustrating i'm not talking about that kick/hat/snare thing ... just take a listen to that brilliant(!) piece of psy-sh*t ... "only" some layered hats and some reversed snares but EXACTLY at the position they should be

Yeah nice percussion there but nothing from outer space... is just basic loop plus some playful percussion that variate each bar for 4 more bars, different riffs, 32ths and almost always playing before the snare. I'm sure you could get close if you study it... but its ok if you rather surrender hehe.

everything is a challenge, now the kick and bass is a challenge but not as bad as arrangement, percussion, and especially melodies. so melodies i guess is where I lack at most. and is the hardest thing for me.
