You can sample drum breaks from funk, disco, rock records etc. and use Recycle to turn those into single hits with a corresponding midi-file (a .rex file). If you want to be original you can rearrange the midi-file and make new breakbeats.
OR you can buy sample cd's with loads and loads of ready-made breakbeats, rearrange and use those in programs like NI's Intakt, Cubase SX or Reason.
OR you can use programs like Phatmatik, or Spectrasonics Stylus RMX to make your breakbeats.
OR you could program them yourself, be sure to turn off quantize, or use swing or groove quantize, or your breakbeat won't have that swing. And it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing.

strange that you said that... i have had that song in my head all day.
anyway, i make breakbeats from scratch. start with nothing, only a few samples and plug away. i guess you could start with drum loops, but takes a little bit of the creativity away. boobytrip had some nice suggestions, some of which im going to try.

the stylus rmx is a killer for those . or u can take a few samples u like and start messing with them on the sequencer .. first u build a basic loop than u start reversing, pitch shifting, time streching,fx and stuff like that on those samples. its alot more work than the stylus but its fun ... or u could just open the rmx... dive in there for 2-3 hours(cause it so much fun playing with that awsome instrument u just get caught up) and find the loop u want. (which takes about 2 minutes actually if your focused on your mission)
if u dig deep enough u just might reach the sky...

listen to some breakbeats tracks and try to figure out how the drums and percs build there
its realy not that hard
basic breakbeat loop is snare each 2nd 1/4 in 4/4 pattern (mean on 2nd/4 and 4th/4)
kick on 1st 1/4 and in the middle between 3rd/4 and 4th/4 and then improvise on that...... bla bla
looks like this in short
K---|S---|--K-|S---|
Jesus didnt dance, but his beat goes on

Soft: maybe you have a thoughttransmitter in your tooth because it was in my head as well
What i forgot to tell is that the Recycle option also enables you to add different plugin-effects to different slices in the loop (at least in Cubase SX): just select a slice, right-click on it->plugins->process and you're done. For some effects that ring on after the sound it can be handy to add a tail, see the 'extra' option in the plugin window to make it work. This can be handy to add some reverb to just the snares, or to filter just the hi-hats. |
