You may be interested to know that these concepts were developed in the 1920s by a Russian/Ukrainian scientist Vladimir Vernadsky. He was one of the founders of the field of geochemistry and he considered the whole planet as a single entity. His theory postulated that the planet evolved from an inanimate "geosphere" by developing the "biosphere" (all life on Earth as a single interconnected system). And we are now in the process of developing the "noosphere" - the global consciousness as an interconnected system of conscious beeings.

Interestingly, this theory did not upset the Communists. Vernadsky was promoted to the top academic ranks and became the founder of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
