Here is your 2002 The Gathering horoscope.
The party will be on Sept 21-23 this year.
You will find the line-up to be similar to last year, but you will be pleasantly surprised by some small changes. In general, the music is gonna kill you.
Crowded? Yes, you will find it to be way too crowded. You will see many beautiful people in the crowd, mind you, as well as some special friends you hadn't seen in a while.
Go wrong? Yes, something very wrong is going to happen. However, many FANTASTIC things will also occur.
As for the weather, bring rain gear, winter gear, and beach gear.
There you go, Hikari, all the info you need! Have a blast.

Last year I was at Vision Quest and then 2 weeks later a lovely small party in Izu called 'Morning Star' (Domino, Kei (ttg)) played.. and it was fantastically magical and small.....I enjoyed the small party more.. so avoid the biggies if u must.. it can still be a great dancing summer!!
...Mr Hanky.. I think that the rest of the world has BIG parties alot compared with Japan, but more importantly the rest of the world has many smaller, legal/illegal/indoor/outdoor/ all kinds of parties lots of small groups of friends with their own 1/1.5Kv mini rigs..doin parties every weekend in the summer.....free....... and Japan.. does not... Its either 'comercial' and indoor, or 'comercial' and outdoor..!!! The idea of 100 friends driving into the country and finding a field and having a small party (just for a party)until either the diesel runs out or the Police/landowner throws you off is just not done in JAPAN... is it? (if u are in Japan and do this kind of thing.. let me know as I will live in Japan soon..)
Enjoy the Summer guys..

Yes, what mad factory says is true from my experience, too. And yes, Squid, the small parties are often better. The big parties though have something that the small ones don't - thousands of people goin off and freakin out together. There's something fun about that. I enjoy all types of parties.
Mostly, I think the degree to which you enjoy any party depends on you and the energy you put into it.
The VQ Gathering will definitely be killer. No doubt about it. |

I enjoyed the big party last year (infected
Mushroom outdoors, on the side of a mountain.. wow..) and ofcourse the people were great... I met some people who I am still good friends with...however.....The very size of the party means that a lot of money is involved... = Commercial Beast... and wherever the Commercial Beast raises its ugly head, it will bite someone..!!
Example: Last years party was for 3 nights. There were 7000 people on this mountain... all of them fucked up on something... for threee days... etc etc etc..... The music stopped at 2:30 pm.. then the announcement was made....'everyone off the mountain by 6pm'..!!!!!! (like many.. I just licked my 3/4 drop..!!.. and now to drive home??)
Anyone in this scene knows what that means... 7000 people trying to drive down 1 road off the mountain, fucked up.. no sleep... no clue...very dangerous situation to put the people into.. no one expected it (30 x-US Marines as security shouting at everyone, fighting themselves to get everyone out of the place)...and for me...this was a direct result of the promoter either ;
(a:) not knowing about the true nature if trance parties??? no way.. they are Israeli..!!! OR
(b:) trying to make as much money as possible by not renting the location for long enough.!! .... more like it..!
..Next time.. have a 2 night party of musc and dance.. then the 3 day =time to come down.. sort out the shit... everyone leaving at different times... less hectic... SAFER FOR ALL CONCERNED..!!!
......The bigger the beast, the worse it's bite..!!..
BOOM

Yes, Monastic, it's a very big beast (which to some I suppose adds to the thrill...?) Did you ask anyone about contingency plans in case of an emergency? Imagine if everyone tried to get off the mountain in 5 mins? Ha!
So, we party at our own risk. Dig with your fingers crossed!
VQ cuts some corners, but in the end it's a killer party. We take it or leave it, I guess. |

Yes, for sure a good idea for having an extra day to get down the mountain. The big parties over here are so commercial, The thing is I like those big parties but the vibes are not as good as before.
Mr. Hanky, I dont mind the crowdedness its good I am sure its fun but the vibes are sometimes no good. If i bump into some one there are some people there that want to start fighting. I mean there have been so many fights at parties lately.
Monastic Squid, If you every want to go to a small killer party contact me. We do small killer parties. Last time our organization, took out some generators a pair of killer speakers and had a private beach party. It was killer. I dj`d at around 1-3 at night it was the best party i have experienced as a dj. Mad factory was there to a killer afternoon set. Next time you come i will take you to the private parties.
Kaatisu, thanks for the info. hope to see you there.
Well this visionquest I will be going camping to. Arcadia I want to go and see especailly meet and talk to Mr.Hanky but i will be in Los Angeles unfortunately.
Visionquest any updates? |

Well my friend, my best small parties were in Japan. We took small clubs and Indian restaurants in Tokyo and closed ourselves inside just up to 100 people for speicel privates as well as outside underground once like in Chichibu, as you said: untill the disel runs out... Full psychedelic, full great Japanese atmosphere, that's actually started today's big events... Enjoy.

Greetings trancers
I too would like to say that some of my best parties in Japan were the small private ones that were just a couple hundred people, but by there very nature these parties are the ones you are going to have a hard time finding! that dose not mean however that they do not exist! the japanese party scene is full on and many many diffrent things are happening big and small all the time. you just need to pay attention. As for the big events being 'comercial' and full of 'people wanting to fight' I myself thinks it is an amazing privilage to be able to go to events like this and that we as trancers can dance en mass under a full moon to the worlds best sound systems and trance artists unhindered and with full permission from the authorities! and in almost compleat safety, ( I have never been threatened or made to feel in danger at a partiy here) and yes at the end of the day we are each resposible for our own safety and I think the japanese scene is very safe and well organised, and full of good people, nothing is ever perfect but if thats the only critisisim you can make is that the party ended at 2:45 in the afternoon and they asked you to leave by 6:00! and you were still stoned well then maybe you should not take the last hit when you know it is going to finish soon! and they mostly close events a lot earlier then that so i dont understand the problem! in generall there is very few places in the world were we can still do this. and believe me if there were no 'comercial ' raves like this here they would be missed. The trance scene has grown and is no longer underground, nor will it ever be again, nor was it ever intended to remain so. that is the natural progression of things and we can either enjoy it for what it is in all its aspects good an bad or join forces with the new generation and create a whole new revolution! I myself am very thrilled to be part of the global trance revolution and I believe the more people dancing the better!!! so keep the faith and lets not forget how very special the whole scene is big and small!

..Nah sorry dude I disagree. Also I think you got it the wrong way round..!!
First, You CAN do a 'commercial rave' almost anywhere in the world.. because the local authority/land owner/Police (depending which country you are in)..are paid !!= Comercialism.! It is the 'FREE' parties (where NO ONE gets paid - the donation bucket is passed around to pay for the fuel - and NO ONE is told when to leave.. they can leave when 'THEY' are ready) ;... these are the parties which remain 'underground', true to the spirit of the scene and will surely be missed (escpecially when countries like England design laws to prevent such gatherings taking place!.........."You are all FREE to do exactly what WE tell you"). Also, Solaluna2001, Greece was held at a municipal camping ground (like VQ last year) and people arrived days before the party.. and were leaving 3, 4, 5 days after the party ended... a perfect scenario... if u wanted to stay and chill after the official end time... you just paid the normal camp site rate like any other day.... the only times I have ever been made to leave an outdoor party site before I feel ready in 10 yrs~ is by the police.. never by the organiser..! I still find it unbelievable!
Second, Trance IS an underground phenomena. Trance is only a 'Comercial Phenomena' in primarily Japan and Taiwan. .(where artists can make truly 'Big Bucks', Glossy Trance Fashion Magazines exist.. and parties usually always require a 'ticket' to get in). For the rest of us global trancers (eg. U.K & Europe, Australia, NZ, South Africa) ~ I have partied in all of these countries over the last 10 years ~ while there is the option of buying a ticket and going indoors to a comercial gig... the very heart of the scene is still based on the Free outdoor party vibe... and I hope it will always stay that way...Just as those original 'Goa~FREE beach party~ Freaks' intended.. outdoors - free - for the people - and for the fun of it.!
BOOM.!

Greetings trance nation
I too agree that the orginal spirtit of the goa scene and the trance in general was one of free for all and everyone chips in and let the party happen, don't get me wrong. however I am also saying that due to this very fact "no one getting paid" for the use of their land has led to the demise of the trance in many country's from Israel to Canada to England and Ibiza. Even in India 92 we had to work our ass's off to get money for the police and believe me some one allways pays, perhaps not you nor many other partiers but at the top some on paid for the sound the generator the police the flights the dj ect...it's all how you want to look at it. The only reason there are still events in Japan is because there was allways enough respect to pay for the venue get permission and do it right, Now if that means i need to pay to come in ok! at least the scene continues and we still get to dance. The party is allways what YOU make it no more no less.
Your point about the extra time after an event to chill is a very good point, i agree and will pass your advice on to VQ organisers for this years event. And as for being able to find these kind of large events that you call comercial every where in the world my friend you are wrong. I to travel everywhere and party everyewhere and I have yet to find equeal any where else in the world. for such a long standing scene to still be able to run small and BIG events unhindered is a merit to the people. Don't dis what you cant do better your self. I think we should be thrilled that there are people out there all around the world who organise thease event for us and go through all the headachs and problems envolved so we can be safe stoned and have a good time!! peace and love and keep the faith!! and hopefully see you at the gathering!! |
