The Final Challenge -Bass Sounds!?!?!

I was in the same situation too. I just got obsessed with the sound quality, especially for the bass..
When I got to the point where the frustrations were on the maximum, I listened to my old tracks..

And what suprise that was!!
Bass sounded more phat, powerfull and qroovy.

The point is...start making music. Just music, forget about the sound quality. Do that last.
Everybody loves great polished tracks, but nothing can beat perfectly played notes.
Just listen to some really old tracks, if you know what I mean

People make this all the time so complicated - its just about feeling and trusting your ears =)

If you know how it has to sound, get out from the rabbitshole and do it by the feeling

Phuck! You nailed it. I don't trust my ears 'cos I have a feeling they're cheating on me. Thanks, you put it so simply and you're absolutely right. Phuck the frequency analyzer, tonight, I'm just going to listen.

Peace

Room can cheat on you, monitors can cheat... but fresh pair of ears don't... most of the time you can listen and know if it is ok or not.

Of course after some hours ears can get tired and dull on some freqs.

And yeah, some old tracks sound not that good.

Actually I think it's not about your monitors and room. If you favorite music sounds good with your speakers - I am quite sure you can rebuild that kind of atmosphere and make a decent mix.

Only think I feel to miss when using low quality speakers is that I cannot control stereo image and find the right spot for the sound; otherwise it's possible to make a good mix with any kind of setup :)

I rather think good bass and kick as a feeling than a good mix :) Spectrum cannot help you to make a sound you want

I'd say you CAN make a "good" mix, not necessarily a perfect, crisp, release ready one, but a good one, probably!

Simple, first, decide rather you want the kick or bass to dominate the subs. Once decided you will know at what octave/key to play your bass at. Get a frequency chart for all the keys. 1 oscillator sawtooth with proper envelope will make a proper psytrance bass. you may want to use 2 oscillators, the sawtooth, and a sine that is just there for boom. also best bassline synthesizers are taupro, audiorealism bassline, sylenth, cronox, the logic synth. theres lots of good ones you just have to pick a good one for bass. the 3xosc in fruity works really well as well. i've made some of my better bass sounds with that simple little synth and an envelope.

i'd like to add bass is the last thing all producers I know catch onto. It was last for me and my friends. I imagine its just due to trying to get a nice fat bass sound that grooves with the kick.. you learn many additional tricks along the way to get your groove on but to start heres a few tips

- Notch your kick and bass in the right places to allow each other to poke through the mix and create space for it

- Vary the velocity of your bass perhaps have velocity hooked to envelope amount.

- Filter envelope is by far the most important factor in a psy bass.

- Vary the length of the notes, turn quantize and snap off and make them just barely shorter than a 1/16 and vary them making the bass hit on the 3rd step of each beat most prominent.

- Sidechain compression

- URS, Waves SSL, other eqs or compressors that will color the sound

- Distortion quadrafuzz is the favorite by most. I use predatohm or just anything.

- Try bit crushing a few hits           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

Thanks man! The other hints I already was familiar with but filter envelope has always been tricky for me. For example, on my Nord Lead 2x, sometimes filter envelope does NOTHING to the sound. I twist the knobs and seems like nothing is happening. Other times, it does. That's why I find it confusing. Also, on short notes, 16ths for example, there's only attack really isn't there? Not much time for the filter affecting DSR!?! Is there something I'm missing here regarding filter ADSR? Can you open this up a little more.

Thanks!

for psytrance :

after u got the sound u want on bass ...full sustain , no attack and release , means zero .. everything in the note length and velocity .. also use your monitors like headphones , bury ur head there and listen .. @ not very blasting volume of course .. that take care of bad monitors and untreated room (if u have those to deal with) .. rest , post a sample here , lots of proper people here who can help ..

and lmao , look @ me , fucking rookie giving gyaan , take care

as far as filter envelope no attack, no sustain, no release, just decay. turn the rest all the way down and the decay to your liking.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)

i think it s more about finding what suit you,it s a combo of many factors, room acoustic and monitors but not really price or if the room is treated or not, some artists have great prodctuion and use shity monitors in untreated rooms, upgraded to high end monitors and went back to their "shitty" ones cause they just work for them

I think accoustic treatment is the most important. You can have great brand of boxes but when there is reflection(s) in that room the whole sound is crap and impossible to mix well.
Now I spend each day in good rooms with good equipment (for a few days just started)and this is a shock.
Some of them don't even got the most expensive boxes but cause of ideal treatment it sound ..simple different .. than my reverbed crappy reflected private home zones for instance.

your right timetraveller: you can only be as good as your room and monitors but you can compensate for the flaws in your setup if you know what they are. test them on a multitude of systems and get something decent. but yeah i need a room and monitors still.           http://www.youtube.com/user/trawhi (tutorials)
