Geez, I guess that makes me officially the grandfather of this forum. At 41 years of age. Maybe one day I will become a techno grandfather, like Antaro, Gil, Raja Ram and co... lol As to the bass, Alien 303, just play different notes until you find the phat one...

i use Alien303 and Sylenth and have no problem.........what notes r u placing ur bass on?
It's not about note placement. I know where to put them to make them groove, just having trouble with the tone/timbre of the notes.
Does "have no problem" in ur case mean: "I just got back from a world tour"??
Not the groove....maybe ur putting ur bass note to low like under C4 area.....and it gets to muddy...i layer 2 bass tracks usually one low and one an octave above.....i didnt get back from a world tour but i am a little bit of perfectionist......i show my songs to my friends and got some nice feedback for one of my songs from this forum and my friends like it.....i just started producing 6 months ago so maybe my basses suck but i dont think so.....one way to tell is if ur bass is decent i think i playing thru ur laptop speaker with no reg.speakers or monitors....like ur regular stupid laptop speaker and if it still sounds ok then u got it man.....peace

Laptop speakers have no bottom end.
So it is not nice reference.
Crappy car audio is nice ref sometimes.

well..I also had a lot of frustration about my basslines...hmm who didnt=) But what i have leared..alteast it works for me...its not hints about filter settings eq n all that..it more about choice of kick and the sound u ar looking after..hum..maybe u did like me u use a kick that u think sounds good in solo..but that kick doesnt match the sound that u ar looking for..actualy i took a track that i really liked the sound of and put it in cubase and then took different kick in a seperate audio track..i tried to find the kick closest to match the sound i am looking for..n i found one pretty close..then i dumped the other audiofile..cause as some people wrote try to copy others kick+bass combo is just shit work..ehmm..but anyways..after i found that kick i combined it with a basspattern kbbb n tuned the bass after my kick..then i strted to play with envelopes..n also i realised that i needed to go down one octave cause i like em nightpsy darker basslines..n also i took another saw n ues as a sub so i could balance the more lighter saw with the subby..makes i more complex sounding i think..but maybe i have to work i with eq afterwards to make it sound clean.yes yes..but i have not put any fx on the bassline except some sidechaining... this is it
ehm actually this sketch really sucks..but i think i'm getting closer to the sound i wanna work with..it feels more right..maybe next sketch i learned a lot from this and can rely on my new knowlegde and put focus on creating a story...=) but hints from a beginners perspective this is..wich sound ar u looking for?? find an appropiate kick to make that sound/atmosphere/mood and work out a bassline from that kick...find your own phiolosophy that makes u go further..=) good luck...
I don't want to go for the ez way out which IMHO is the typical "dagadaa dagadaa" psy trance bass sound. I'm trying to make dance music that is psyhedelic, yes, but not necessarily 148 BPM "digidii digidii". So I'm after groovier basslines and it's those that I'm having difficulty with since not all notes are of equal velocity and duration, which often is the case in generic psy. With the groovier stuff the bass sound needs to be more alive!
But this is good, I like the discussion so far and my spirits are higher and I'm trying to get inspired, instead of frustrated.
one way to tell is if ur bass is decent i think i playing thru ur laptop speaker with no reg.speakers or monitors....
Um what do you mean by monitors ?
sorry im new to this music making, hay just want to say to everyone good job on trying to help mcmasterbates hope you get your bass line, cause i suck at bassline toooooo lol but i really havent sat down to try and get one some one told me i should be fine cause i got Komplete 6 and his name was Tab from Super8 and Tab. he said he uses normal presets from massive and raktor5 with plug-ins on top of it hope this helps bro and stress less if you dont get it its not the end of the world. Ok, here's the deal, IMHO I've got lots of things down (making drum loops, synth programmming, play guitar, know about eq, comp's etc) except for bass!! Here's some history:
I've been playing and producing EDM (incl. psy-trance) for fucking 10 years now, and I STILL can't get the bass sounds down. It AIN'T about the gear as I've got Fireface 400, MacPro and Genelec's. I'm so hopeless about this that I'm ready to sell my shit and fucking forget about music forever. I currently have:
Nord Lead 2x
Roland SH-101
Spectrasonics Trilian
Ableton Live 8 Suite
I have other stuff too, but even ONE of these should be enough to make great fucking bass sounds. Now the 101 is IMHO the best, but it's not velocity sensitive so makes it a little limiting. And, BEFORE anyone tells me I'm lazy or sumshit, trust me I've been twisting the fucking knobs, tried layering 2 or more sounds together, eq'ing those, separating high, lower and sub -bass sounds, I've tried tweaking the shit out of it all, I've looked at countless tutorials online, even the presets in Trilian sound crap to me, there's isn't one I can use, what is the secret people??? Please someone help me out, I'm so fucking desperate and I don't need anymore shit in my face so please leave the "it's cos you suck comments" out.
Why bass- why??!!?
* cries and starts wiring up the noose *
If you can't get your bass to sound good no matter what, it means that the rest of the mix has mistakes in it. EQ the rest of your stuff so it won't clash with the bassline as much and it should be great, and perhaps use a linear phase EQ to high-pass at 30-40Hz since you probably aren't hearing those on your monitors and could be the reason that you are having problems.
You can also do other slick things like add a bit of chorus or reverb, add some stereo separation, etc. And of course, use some good compressors on bass, this is very critical. Of course, with the SH101 it is good to sample it's output, since as an analog machine no two sounds are exactly alike, and from a production standpoint that can be a problem.

A good trick i found is to cut the low frequencies from your bass and then slowly bring them up until it sits well with the kick , even with a long bass note one should go with the other ,if u listen to some chillout tracks one sometimes wonder if it was the kick or a bass that played at that point
some one told me i should be fine cause i got Komplete 6 and his name was Tab from Super8 and Tab. he said he uses normal presets from massive and raktor5 with plug-ins on top of it hope
Haha...I know Super8 through work. He also said that most top producers use presets and then just EQ and Compress them the way they know how!!
Some good tips people, thanks, will try it all out! I definitely have to keep working and working and.....

Fix your head and life and just do music by the feeling. If you are familiar with "all the tricks" you listed above, you know everything you need to. Now just trust your ears and do what is necessary to make sound fit together. People make this all the time so complicated - its just about feeling and trusting your ears =)
If you know how it has to sound, get out from the rabbitshole and do it by the feeling :)

Try this with Bass section:
COMPOSITION
-Make kick thats sounds really massive and good by itselfs. synth, eq,comp, bounce kick back to sequencer and analyze the length in waveform
-arrange a bassline thats sounds cool to yourself and sound is pleasant
MIXING
- on bass, put HP filter up to 200hz and eq the bassline until it sounds cool with kick. Lower HP Filter by steps and listen when mix get muddy and use Low shelf filter to lower low frequencies on bass. when your hp is at 30hz and the bass is not masking the kick it's fine. you can also boost some areas on bass at low frequencies after you bring them down with low shelf

Phuck! You nailed it. I don't trust my ears 'cos I have a feeling they're cheating on me. Thanks, you put it so simply and you're absolutely right. Phuck the frequency analyzer, tonight, I'm just going to listen.
