hi everybody, i'd like to ask you all for opinions, preferences and ideas - for you are the ppl who know best!

i'm building a hardware controller from scratch, and i have the following in mind:

- 8 faders with 4 banks (virtual faders)
- 16 potis with 4 banks (virtual potis)
- 2 buttons per channel strip with 4 banks (virtual buttons)
- buttons for sequencer control (stop/play, rwd/fwd, record)
- buttons for menu control (settings etc)
- 5 buttons assignable (sequencer markers etc)
- all faders/potis/buttons are assignable (cc# etc)

now what would you ask of an ideal hardware controller?

thanks for the creative minds around here
all the best!

one thing that i would love to see is
LCD displays that show you what each controller is set to. you could change the label by software. i know thats a little unrealistic but still.. i'd like to have that.

also i would like a new kind of button. on my controller i have square "on/off" buttons that are a 0/1 switch. i want buttons like these, but instead of 0/1, they would go from 1..x. Every time u press them, they add 1, and go back to 1 after x. This would be useful for selecting a waveform on an oscillator, and many other things, that dont really need a knob/slider.

good luk!

hey sundrop, thanks for your creative input!

- i think displaying the controller number could be done on the main lcd (as a compromise between not displaying and having dedicated small lcds), with a few additional buttons or some other means (sensor, movement detection). certainly a bit more work but a good idea!

- the new kind of button with values in [1..x] is a very good idea, i think i'll do that because it's solvable in software without really much pain

all the best to you mate

My dream:

* Motorized faders with high-resolution (like in mackies);
* One horizontal (centered) fader;
* Endless knobs with visual feedback (lights);
* Triggers pad;
* A big, bright LCD pannel (maybe a touchscreen LCD);
* A good and intuitive software for editing presets.

Cya,

@ woyzeck:
yeah, the horizontal fader is a good idea. the software is possible too, java supports midi so it could be done

@ Terrafractyl:
