I had a conversation with a local trance DJ here who said that he thinks trance has come to a point where there is nothing more to do and that we are seeing a period where things are being recyled. He said he's turning to a more tech housey side of trance. This of course made me feel very depresed because he was a great trance DJ and I hate to see him stop playing it. But then again I could say that perhaps he is right. Do you people think that there really isn't much inspiration and ideas left for the trance music to keep developing. look at full on for instance, it's a relativley new style which has already become too predictable. Alien project, gms and astrix all pretty much have the same basis and they are all in a hyperproductive stage where we have dozens of tracks and albums which all sound alike. And also everything is less and less psychedelic about our music. We see better basslines, kick drums, high hats and all those things that are the characteristic of other electronic music styles. There are less and less of those trippy snares, effects and all that stuff you heard in the period after the death of goa trance till the birth of full on since I really don't think that full on is a style that's so psychedelic. We've also seen trance merge with other styles like techno(X-dream, wizzy noise) and tech house(iboga's mixture compilation) and I think that in these examples we are also seeing more techno and tech house than trance.

I mean it's not so hard to believe that in the near future there won't be any trance left because it will probably merge with all the other styles of electronic music. Look at goa trance for instance. 7-8 years ago it was blasting away the dancefloors but now no one is producing this kind of music anymore. No label will release this kind of music now.

And It could very well happen to the entire trance scene. Label sales are also droping. Flying rhino was closed last year and now it's only spirit zone and dragonfly who were here from the beggining and I doubt they are doing well.

I think the only thing that could save our scene would be everything around it but the music itself since there is so many things around it like religions, beliefs and the whole spirituality thing about it and simply a tribe like lifestyle.

What's your oppinion on this? I know I sound depressive but it's not so impossible to believe that one day the trance sound we all know and love will dissapear and I for one would hate to see that happen.           DJ Dovla | Interchill Records, Flow Records

The scene is changing, that's a fact. I think nobody knows what will happen, but if trance dies (wich I doubt, at least for the next 10 years or so) I think its contribution to the world as been imense. It changed the living of everyone who understood it. Not only the music, but the relationship with our brothers and sisters, the earth and nature and with ourselves. The gathering of ppl in a natural environment, the tribal ritual of dance, the respect towards nature, the feeling of unity, that I think will not disapear from our minds.
If the music is changing, that's just evolution. You wrote about GMS, Astrix, Alien Project, saying theyr sound is getting boring. Well, maybe you're listening to bands who don't bring that kind of inovation you're looking for. Don't get me wrong, I love some of the tracks that they have been releasing, but novelty is not what I expect.
Bands like Krumelur, Promon, Charasmatix, Prodigal Sun, Segment, Necton, I find inovative.
This is what I think.

Dovla, i'm kinda new to the trance scene, but this is my perception: I'm sure parties were way better in terms of fun in the old goa days, but i don't think the scene is shrinking. As a matter of fact, i think it's growing too rapidly and that's why it is undergoing a major change...
I don't agree with your view of full-on, sure it's less psychedelic than old-school goa, but i think some of the "psychedelia" which made the mind fly (a LOT in old-school goa), was exchanged for more stompy sounds, which makes the body fly (more than in goa IMO).
So while full-on still retains the ability to make your mind fly, it is more of a balance than goa, and makes the body fly no less.
About the progressive/minimal/etc, i think these styles emphasize more on the stompy part than in the "psychedelia". That's why i'm not a big fan of these styles.
I think trance will last a lot longer than 10 years. While it's underground music, i think it has already left its mark in the music world, along with techno and house electronic music, although these are much more on the rise than psytrance.
Lastly, if you think you've had enough of GMS/Astrix/etc i advise you to look after new artists. At least in my country there are a few of them which really make beautiful music, and the music isn't even remotely GMS/Astrix clone. Just one of them (the best IMO) - Menog.
I also think that being tired of that kind of music can also be blamed on dj's... they all play gms and astrix and similars... there is a lot of good music to play, one just needs to open the mind and try to listen to everything!
As a learning dj, i impose myself a limit of one gms track per set, one alien project and two astrix (max!) - and maybe that's too much! However, i've heard sets from top dj's that have as much as 20% gms... It's fun in the beggining, but over time it becomes a pain in the ass, especially for people who go to parties every weekend/2 weeks.
I hate when i listen to the same gms track twice in a party (different dj's of course)!

Peace

PS: don't misunderstand my post. I LOVE old-school goa, i just find full-on more danceable. What i don't like that much is progressive/minimal/etc (of course there are exceptions. there are a few minimal tracks which i find very good).

don't speak bout things which are not, or they will be.
as long as if there are new, innovative acts, psytrance will live on.
ignore things that make psytrance dead, enjoy things which help to survive....my three dollars           Anakoluth A Pebble in Your Eardrum's Shoe since 2001!

I think the trance scene is reaching a point where creative & good things are harder to produce!

Some ppl are saying that trance is dead... and new styles (house or techno...) are reaching a higher state... it's not true, house or techno are dead from a long time now, everyone agrees with it.. the trance scene, is the one that can be more explored cause it has variety... and IT WILL LIVE ON

I dunno, i'm in kinda crappy mood but i think the artists must be much much more innovative and think harder to create new music.
but i don't think trance will die, but the bands that recycle their music will perish soon (1-2 years), i hope new ideas wiil cross psy's path.

BTW- this thread has a bad vibes, but i had them for a few days now so it does'nt matter to me.
