Many people say that what makes a DJ to a good one are his abilities to create a story/journey with his set and to understand the crowd + feel what the ppl need. I agree!
So my questions are: Who has the decisions? Who makes the call what music will be played?
If the crowd doesn't like the story, the ppl will vote with their legs and leave the place. But what Would happen when the DJ wants to take the crowd to his journey and the ppl do not want to travel with him? They want to go to another 'country'.
So the crowd is the DJ? And the DJ not always gets to play in his way what he wants?

To be more specific lets take for example pure progressive party::
What about the story/journey? The DJ plan b4 the party? Or in a spontaneous way on the event itself?
Have u ever felt that u want to take the party to one place but it will not work because the crowd need to go to another direction? the crowd leads u, or u lead the crowd? Maybe it works both ways? I am just trying to understand it from the dj p.o.v

this question is for all DJs here in Isratrance           -=The Meaning Of Life Is To Give Life A Meaning=

i guess its realy individual and changes from dj to dj but even wen a dj pley set that was preperd from befor he will shurly change it during the set but its rer that dj maks a preperd set and pley it 1 to 1 .

and weter the dj leeds or the croud well i guess the dj shuld leed it is his job! he is the leeder the shaman.and the dj shuld know the needs of his croud and provide it but not in a cheep wey in a wey that throo giving the croud what he wonts,to sweep them to a jurny and make them iventualy give them self awey, there is a point in a good dj set that the dj hes got the crouds comfidence in him then they are like plastalina and he shaips them the wey he wonts!

cheers.

I feel that it's a combination of the dj leading the crowd and the crowd hinting the direction that they want to go. It's possible to take them on a journey, you just might have to be subtle about it. Let's use the progressive party as an example again...
You are playing from 12-2 am at a party and the dj before you is playing some Son Kite style stuff... Do you start of playing KDD and Horror Place? Find a happy starting point where you can get to where you want the crowd to be and they wouldn't even know that you were eventually getting to the crazy stuff before it hits them full force. Start of with something like some older Lish or some Freq or something like that and work your way through some techtrance, and start sneaking in some techy darker tracks to see how the dancefloor likes it... If they are still grooving with you while you increase the intensity, then you might be able to work your way to where you wanted to be. You might not be able to play any of the Horror Place you wanted to play, but you might be able to play some good darker stuff that has a techno influence but not be as abstract as where you wanted to go.

It can be very difficult as a dj to be able to come to terms with sometimes you can't play everything that you wanted to play and you might have to play something that coincides with what the djs before and after you are playing.

I am in firm agreement with the organizer putting together a nice solid lineup where you won't have someone who plays really aggressive crazy stuff right before or after someone who plays progressive or morning fluffy stuff... There is room in the night to do a progression, it just depends on who is asked to play.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

In my opinion the DJ in a party is as much a leader of the crowd as the crowd leads him. This is a give and take relationship. Personally I never plan my sets and most of the time even 15 minutes before I have no clue what will be the first track I will play, but I give the crowd full decision making in my set ( not that ppl come in and suggest what I should play hehe ) but I try to feel the general vibe and to flow with it, whilst the FINAL DECISIONS are mine As a DJ I always try to remember tho, that the main idea that crowd goes for long distances and pays expensive tickets for a party, is to have a quality psy journey and to DANCE. At least the majority of the ppl are. There fore I really try less to 'educate' the crowd with extraordinaire and eclectic tunes but make them dance, and when all is well, then u can suddenly drop that super-smart-ass-amazing-psychedelic-but-not-that-danceable-bomb, and it will work out just fine.

In the end of the day ppl come to have a good time, have a little workout in the nature and some more nice hallucinations.. As long as the DJ provides this - alles gut
