The cost of a compilation ?

Hi everybody,
I've always wondered how much (approx) it would cost to produce a compilation of my own.
Lets say for example the tracklist comprises of these artists.
1.Dino
2.Deedrah
3.Allaby
4.Jaia
5.(new up and coming artist)
6.Headroom
7.The Antidote
8.Intelabeam
9.Ecliptic
Obviously the fee's the fee's will vary depending on the artist.
So how about it then guys and girls, could you put a rough total on the cost of licensing these tracks?

- Unless you have a super network of label-people, artists and people who know people, it seems like a far shot. Or at least it wount be cheap. ..I think. I dont know.

To be honest, no! i just wondered about the cost and practicality of such a project. Though never say never eh?
I'd say you're definitely right about the connections being the key.
Fingers crossed the labels will indeed share their wisdom.

Well, compilations with well known names will always cost extra. Logical enough. But many of these crap labels that are popping up here and there are often run by "rich kids", people who knows people and hard working people. Some label can easily start up and release a album with an unknown act.

say for that line-up, just the music will cost you about 2800$ Euro if not more, and im just guessing that dino and dado charge about 700 euro per track !!
plus you will pay about 1500 euro for producing the CD (jewelcase)..
then if you pay an artist to draw your cover.. Mastering...
your looking at something around 5000 Euro !!
good luck and i would love to see your compilation released.. great names..

I think that the price per track like should depend on the kind of track not just every travk is the same because i cannot imagine that the work done by some artists is the same as that of others. Also i think that 300euro per track is very little considering the time and the investment an artist works for one track. Even thus considering that a compilation should cost so much i think it would be worth it if people buy original cd's.

So in other words. Almost no labels make money on their releases? So say a compilation costs 5000 Euro and it sells under 1000 copies. Well, since less people buy albums now, AND more labels are beeing started. How can anyone make money? .. Exept big ones like Twisted, HOMmega and BNE wich sells alot.

Most of the artists you mention, I don't know personally... But artists like that, take commonly EUR600 for a track. It all depens if you want an exclusive track. If it's exclusive, it might me more expensive, if it's not exclusive, it might me a little bit cheaper. If it's friends, you might get special deals...
So if you have nine tracks, let's say:
Artist payments:
EUR600 X 9 =EUR 5400,-
Payment to the public publishing companies:
(depens on how many you press/sell, but let's say:)
EUR 1250,-
Cover art: (Let's say:)
EUR: 450,-
Mastering: (Varies a lot, but let's say:)
EUR: 875,-
Pressing: (depends on how many you press and which company, but let's say:)
EUR 2000,-
Promotion, postage etc: You can use endless of money on this, but let's say:)
EUR 400,-
You may also spend money on a web page etc... You will also have to pay tax to your country, but that depends on how much you sell etc, so I will not count that in here...
So, an easy estimating, you will have to pay at least:
EUR: 10375,-
You have to be a rich kid, or work your but off to save money... You will not earn a penney on it, only loose... Good luck..!;)
