the binaural beat.......where is it in psy...?

A friend introduced me this weekend to a new concept i wasnt aware of, but often "felt" when listening to psychedelic trance.....:the binureal beat:

""A binaural beat is a psychoacoustic effect, a perceived pulsing, which occurs when tones of a few Hz difference are played in each ear independently. The frequency of the beat is the sum of the difference between the tones in each ear

Thus a 440hz tone played in the left ear and a 450hz tone played in the right ear would result in a perceived pulse of 10hz, a tone that would otherwise be physically impossible to hear.

It is further believed that through the process of brainwave entrainment, the psychoacoustical effect of binaural beats can affect the operation of the brain, synchronizing the overall brain state to the frequency of the binaural beat

Thus a 10hz binaural beat would slow the brain to what scientists have called the Alpha state, a brain state associated with meditation, visual imagination and peacefulness.""

You can have a taste of this by youtubeing....autehchre or autehcher.....

I wonder if artists know the concept...if it is reproduced in psy or could be reproduced...
I feel it is something interesting to dig into......understand...explain..
a deep psychedelic state that i found myself into is definetely associated with the alpha state...

any comments...?

I'm trying to control those frequencies at the moment, but it's pretty hard 99% of the time you end up with slight white noises which are pretty hard to play around with, but i guess that's the whole point of it, just play with them in the background of the track to create feelings and emotions connected to certain sounds in your track.

Here is some Autechre if you're interested....awesome videos interlaced with music!!! enjoy

Boom Boom bella nick

P.s we should probably ask alan how this stuff works

The search is failing for me right now, but awhile ago there was a post in the equipment-music creation forum about this. From what I remember it might be worth trying to dig up?

There was a label that was interested in making a whole compilation a few years ago with a focus on binaural beats. Im not sure what happened to the compilation, but I do remember that the effect only really works when headphones are used, and even then its only really apparent when using single tones. Doing this with music might not be possible, and would definitely not benefit a listener at a party.

But my memory isnt the greatest, I could be talking complete bollocks

Does Hyperbeats and Antibeats got anything to do with this phenomenon?

maybe .... could also work in an open or closed stereo environment .. but may have limitations / anomalies based on the position of the speakers, subject and the properties of the listening environment.

still .. very interesting none the less!!

no, it just won't work. the frequency is completely percieved by your brain from having 2 discrete signals entering each ear.
In an open air environement there would be no way for your left ear to not hear the signal that is ment for your right ear.

what about in an open space with no reflective surfaces for about 1/2km .. like for example in the middle of the desert? speakers positioned 90 degrees left and right to the audience and speaker centreline elevated to around 15 degrees facing up. the idea is to mimic the stereo headphone environment.

does anyone know the reflective proporties of sand?

my friend in the background .... "u r full a jibberish dude!!"

i like the spirit psynaesthesian....its all about experimentation.....
but i can see your point heretical.....very valid!

i would like to know more on how these feelings given by the binaural beat...more specifically this alpha state....can be reached soo easily (i think we all agree) with psy.....and why not as easily achieveable with other kind of music.....
i felt a lot of times that i was totally controlled by the music, and my feelings were following the beat.....a derango set, in my personal experience, is the closest i got to this alpha state....very deep feelings....

any contribution welcome....

the videos posted btw are among the best in terms of flow with the music ive seen....

(PS frank....alan has his own binaural beat...always laughing!!)

I think things are getting confused here with the word beat.
Autechre's music is just kick ass music, its not binaural beats.
Binaural beats dont even sound like a beat, its just a sine wave in one ear, sine wave in the other ear. It just sounds like a constant hum.

The only way to stop the sound wavs from one source from entering the wrong ear is to have the ears enclosed. Thats why it will only work with headphones.
Its really not that great, cool edit 95 can generate them if you want to mess around while trying to go to bed or something.
