We all pondered in many threads about the different styles that what we call 'psy-trance' contains- Goa, Full-on, Dark, Progressive - to name a few. We all agree that there are different aspects and views, that some like their 'psy' experience to be deep, dark, evil while some like it melodic and uplifting. Some like it minimal and some like it full of scratches...

My question is WHY?
Why are all these style considered a part of the 'trance' definition? why do we gather here under the same blue roof to discuss music styles that seem to be so different, without anything common in them?
What's the thread that connects progressive/minimal to melodic/Full-on to dark/scratchy to crazy/twisted and even some house grooviness?

So, share your views...

the PSY harmony between them which mean:

Clean production
Deep et Complex structure
Layer over Layer over layer of sound
Rarely boring

There is a way in the Psytrance that make it different then any other genre like trance techno house...

It's a mix of everything good melt together to produce the Perfect sound...

i dunno...

it's just freaking good music to my ear, compared to the rest.           http://www.spannungsbogen.com

i dont think they are that different...basically they were growing out of the same idea and intend the same goal. and because we all more or less like the same stonelayers of our music i think our thoughts and way of life are pretty similar to some extent.

my view...

because all these different 'styles' or names for these styles came later... first there was psytrance... and then different kinds of sounding psytrance (like the ones you mentioned) was made.... but it all started from a similar place, thats why its under the 'same blue roof' as you said....

its not that all these different styles always existed and then later were put under the trance roof.

first there was the trance roof... then later different rooms were build under the roof...

though I agree that there are some styles that are very different... but are still put under the trance roof... for example clubby music like oakenfold etc. and other kind of electronic dance music that people call trance.... I dont consider music like that under the same roof... and to me its an actual mistake that some people consider it from the same family of music.

its more like...
first there was no roof at all (just amazing outdoor parties)
then there was a roof
and since we were now indoors people started to build rooms
and sometimes we build too many rooms or end up with the wrong room under the wrong roof or something... but it really doesnt matter because even though there are walls all over the soundwaves are still rocking through the air.           www.facebook.com/DjJanux

Every style in trance in general builds from several important "lines". There are five lines that are most important ones: the "kick line","bass line", effects line","acid line" & "melody line".

All the electronic music builds from those lines, which is the first and most common connection between them all.

Secondly, all the trance styles built for one purpose: to get you into state witch, you gust right, called trance. It done with the use of repeated loops, psychdelic effects (witch also reaped themselves), the use of high volume at the parties etc'.

The family in general called trance music but over the years it split to other genres: goa, melodic, progressive, minimal, full-on, dark and other. They all connect because basically they all belong to the same "family". Trance.

Hope I helped you.

I think the music is quite different from each other, and they share few similarities. to answer the question, the thing that bonds us is what we expect from the music. although its not 100% same for everybody, most psy listeners go to gatherings to share a similar experience. the love for nature, dancing with bare feet, dancing under the moon, watching the sun rise as the music goes blasting on etc.
altough there is a lot of categorization done thesedays, in the end when I go to a gathering, I still like to think of us as part of a large and happy tribe           `Bottomless wonders spring from simple rules, which are repeated without end` Mandelbrot

psychedelic trance is one of the few scenes that thrives on differences, instead of trying to impose one way or another, psychedelic lets you be whatever you want to be and lets you explore your possibilites as you wish.

psychedelic does not preach any dogma, the only things we all want is to dance under the moon and sun and unite with the cosmos and all things that exist in our universe. psychedelic is not a religion, its not a school of thought, its just an inmanent network of individuals who decided to embrace life as it is, explore its variations and multiply them, its a technological tribe, something that capitalism cant control, something that states cant control.

we are everyday creating this movement, we all have to pursue our ways throught the system, but at the same time we are generating a new way to live, its not about taking drugs and party all day long, its about getting together as one planetary tribe of people trying to be happy and enjoying the incredible world we live in. we are a gigantic community of freaks, jugglers, hippies, nomads, finding cracks in the system everyday, finding ways to respond to one's true desire and not what capitalism desires.

the best thing of psychedelic is that we do not impose it, we just are, we are the best example of what im saying here, we dont have to form a political party, we just live and try to be in sync with all things, and this incredible energy that proppels us is completely contagious, we are this friendly virus propagating throughout the world, and we all know that once you get infected, life wont never be the same.

psychedelic is freedom, no rules, no differences, just dancing barefoot in a beach in the middle of nowhere. we all have different ways to get to this state of unity with everything, some of us need darkness, others light, others somewhere in the middle, but we all get to the same point just dancing with the universe as it moves, everyone and everything together in a perfect and continuous variation as infinite as the cosmos itself.

the way i see it, psychedelic trance is the perfect proof that humanity still has a chance of re-thinking the way it organizes. all these are alternative values we are generating can truly save us all, so be a hippie forever, fuck money, fuck capitalism, fuck everything that does not make you happy and once again, long live psychedelic trance

One of the main things that unite all kinds of psytrance is the kick, a fat kick! House, techno or whatever never has thoose FAT kicks. Also driven basslines, (almost) never exprimental, (almost) allways very easy to dance to.

Well said there filter.

And I have to agree with Flake of Freedom about what he said as well.

This is the way I see it though: When goa first started out the artists would make a point of creating this music to channel our chakras in the right alignment to make our souls perfect. To transend to a higher place and experiance a truly "trance" experience. Like in ancient times when we used to dance around fires in the true outdoors to deep bass drums and beautiful melodies sung my women. To abandon all thoughts of your everday troubles and feel the music move through your body. Today they are recreating it in different ways to access certain chakras and make you feel certain emotions (dark = naughty/excited, fullon = pure joy and jumping for happiness, progressive = emotional/pure love, melodic = calm/peaceful and finally neo fullon/funky (as I call it) = naughty and playful).

Most trance that is brought out nowadays has (or should) these thoughts in mind. They are channeling ppl's thoughts and minds to places beyond this world.

And that is why I love it!           :: Life can be as bitter as dragon tears
But whether dragon tears are bitter or sweet
depends entirely on how each man perceives the taste ::

Well, some very spiritual interpretations in the last posts. My point of view is much more down-to-earth.

I see two different perspectives, which should be united I guess :

1. Musical aspect : Psy Trance shew some very distinctive features in the mid-90's, which were already mentionned previously. I'd just pick one : a terrific bassline. Probably the heaviest you could here in an electronic musical track. Nowadays this is less true since this feature has been adopted by almost every regular Club anthem.

2. Psychedelic aspect : Basically, every [electronic] music producing a psychedelic effect on YOU can be called Psy Trance. Whence the feuds like "Is Techtrance Psy Trance ?". For some it is, for others it isn't. The musical structure of the track is irrelevant to that connection.

Fat kicks? Clear production? Complex structures? Experimental ideas? Give me a break, the techno world is a league above psytrance in all these parameters unless you take the true cream of the crop of psytrance acts (like Prometheus who really released a gem this year).

Nowadays psytrance is a very simple thing: the easiest high energy music to dance to even if you have absolutely no sense of rhythm.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222
