ismism (bazzism maker) is working on a multiband sidechain compressor which I'm beta testing.
I think it will be an insanely nice tool.
It is possible to sidechain a bass with a kick but only compress, dampen the low frequencies of the bass. like a dynamic equalizer so to speak.
But also the opposite is possible because its an expander too. you can for example not dampen a pad on every kick but actually make it louder in whatever frequency region you desire...
using drumloops as modulator and mixed compression/expansion settings on different band of a pad also is quite experimental...
There are still some bugs and things to do, but I believe the plugin will kick ass and make me forget any other sidechain.

i would agree to automation...but i think it depends on the sequencer. in ableton live its pretty easy to make sidechain effects with automation. best example, you want to sidechain a bassline with the kick's signal. but now you don't use an effect but fade in the bass volume with automation at every kicks position. by using copy and paste this is totally easy and takes 5 seconds 
for more complex sidechain structures there is built in sidechaining in live for the dynamic machines. it's similar to logic i'd say...it works fine !!!
