What is your experience with DAW control apps so far?

I am trying to find out which app would be most appropriate for me and after researching a bit I realized that I cannot really choose which solution would be the best, so I decided to ask for advice and experience.

First I looked for an app for the legendary synthesizer Z3TA which is also the best one that I use in my DAW (currently studio one). There I found http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/Z3TA/iOS , pretty familiar interface, 20 dollar, nice if you want to control the synth by touching and sliding instead of a mouse.

Then I started to look for an app that would support any given DAW and any given synth in it. (BTW I am not sure if the Z3TA would support studio one either and testing means buying immediately). I found http://www.synthtopia.com/content/2012/11/08/daw-control-app-ipad/ which looks like a great and cheap app but the comments of the users disturbed me a bit. Going to try it later.

After that I came to Lemur https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/lemur/id481290621?mt=8 which is supposed not only to be the best app for midi control but also the best app on the app store. As a matter of fact I found this one extremely interesting and would love to continue learning with it, but here again I am not sure that it will be appropriate since it is optimized for Ableton.

So at the end, before I through out 50-100 Euro for new apps, I thought it could be a good idea to ask.

Does the Z3TA iOS allow you to control the VST Plugin as well or is it just a standalone iPad app?           http://facebook.com/ansolas

This is exactly what I am trying to find out before buying it .

In the description they write: external midi control + "plugin into any iPad compatible midi controller". However, there seems to be an ongoing debate about which midi devices are compatible with iPad: a short glimpse in google shows that you need hours and days to get over all theoretical specifications. Besides, in my case, for my purposes, I use a roland keyboard connected through a steinberg device with my DAW and in the best case I would like this to be my whole hardware equipment, so that everything else is controlled either by iPad or in the DAW itselft. I have been told to buy an appropriate smaller midi controller but for my purposes it is very important to keep my roland as for example I love to check synth presets over 4 and a half octave and chords over 5 octaves with fingers ( this is easier to me because I play piano). And besides, I often play piano classics on it, so a small controller is not what I need and I dont think I have the physical place and all the money for a lot of good hardware.

However, as far as I can see, checking things out by testing is the fastest alternative...

Thanks, this one seems to have quite an interesting interface and probably would be a great thing to play with, after the basis work is done (making an iPad to a midi controller).

Here is a great start for understanding iOS synths:
http://www.musicappblog.com/ios-synth-apps-roundup/

And Z3TA seems to work on a hardware midi keyboard.

Yeah it works on a hardware keyboard, but not as control surface for the vst           http://facebook.com/ansolas

I guess, it "controls" exactly as much as a physical synth. And if your sound is usually created on midi keyboard and from then into the DAW, then you might love to download a couple of great synths for 20 dollar instead of paying hundreds.

My choise after researching is the MIDI designer app, because it seems to be really flexible, you can create new knobs and complex relationships between them. And also, it is nearer to what you would learn in tutorials than lets say Lemur which seems to have great features for individual creation too.

How about this? For just 20 Euro, there would not be much to lose if it doesnt work wifi with studio one, or may be just a new (old) DAW.

A while back i bought korg gadget (use it like a game once i just like to fiddle around while lying in bed and caustic

Both are fun but i havent used tham for something serious yet.

Last week i bought lemure and x1

Pretty nice to have anytime the selected channel available on the ipad. It even remembers learned plugin parameter ! And supports 14 bit resolution. I slightly modified the faders behavior to have inertia which roxx.
Once I am deeper into it I can post more details           http://facebook.com/ansolas

This is really amazing
It made me speechless, because I know too little about lemur, but it looks fantastic and really interesting, respect!

May be you could say what a beginner should know and go through before he/she understands your lemur template and for what purposes it can be used?

Sure,

you will get a solid mixer, with track names/colors and db values. Transport stuff, Bpm setting, all those numbers that show 120 in the pic, are placeholders for actual values and names. So you do get a nice overview about whats going on. The arrow next to the record buttons let you select tracks in the project, also you can deactivate and activate whole tracks, and use the crossfade options

There will be a vst open button in the near future as well, same as project save and lots of other stuff going to come.

Then there are all the panel modes based on the dual screen profile. So these work in the arrangement view. You know, device panel, note editor panel, mixer..

On the device page, you can navigate between the tracks as well, like on the mixer page and you can choose the presets for the primary device and the cursor device.

Furthermore you got lots of choices to control your devices, read the names to the right, they show you the available parameters that can be controled via the faderbanks. Like primary device macros and again the macros for the chosen device at the same time. Or the user tab, where you can access the primary device macros and any learned user parameters in the project.

Then there are the sends, wich let you choose one of the 8 tracks from the track bank in the upper row, and another track from those 8 tracks in the lower row. Thats the same trackbank that is currently set for the mixer on the mixer page.

Clip launcher should be obvious i guess, thats going to be rebuild, there are sometimes problems with the first initialisation, but after working a little with it does work good. So you have feedback on trackcontent, can stop them indibvidualy and return to arrangement, also scene start. A basic mixer and transport controls are available there as well.

pads, simply are drum pads, same for the keys..

And the XY controls can be user learned and used as xy pads. Those are the same cc numbers as under the device tab "user parameters"

Might be good to know that in Bitwig, the first device in a chain on a track is always the primary device. But you can define any other device via a rightclick as primary. So its all about controling different devices at the same time.

hope this helps a little, i'm gonna do a videa after the next update. A new clip launcher will come and quite some other stuff.

cheers

Did you hear about the great remote control app available for ipad and studio one 3?

http://www.presonus.com/products/Studio-One-Remote

There you have all your effects and channels at a glimpse on a second screen, which is really helpful if you normally use most of your monitor space with the synth tabs and with the midi notes editor so that you never have enough space on the monitor to observe controls, effects, synth tabs and midi notes at one glimpse altogether. And it is a free app for ipad, the only thing to do is to get a studio one version three.

In the meanwhile I bought and tried a few solutions for ipad but I must confess that I do not use any of them in a "longer saturday evening session". I only use them while travelling in the underground going to work or on the way back home. As I live in the suburb forests, travelling takes time and makes wonderful ipad sessions possible.

It is a weird thing to do, for example the z3ta app is like a synth with almost full functionality that you always carry in your bag and you could work on sound any time you want. unfortunately you cannot really save much of it and build up more channels. At least I do not know how, but I believe the app does not have this functionality. It is more like a synth in your pocket to make a small live session anywhere you go.

Btw I was wondering if anyone knows more about: "Studio One Remote is based on PreSonus’ UCNET protocol for fast, reliable network connectivity and remote control." What is this protocol exactly, is it different from what Steinberg uses for example?

@Suloo, thank you very much for describing the functionality! Is there a source of information to read more about how the whole architecture has been programmed, to see the software pattern of how this whole story has been created, anything to help understand the basics behind it? What would you recommend?
