After someone claimed this on another forum (www.Mnml.nl), I came to notice as well, that when I'm making music and having the beat playing, it ruins my inspiration totally.
When I have a musical idea in my head, and I play the beat, instantly I completely loose grip on that Idea I had in mind, very weird.
And at the same time I came to conclude that when I'm high, which I usually am, when making music, that really any sound I play withing Cubase, just blocks my imagination from creating new things.
I could build entire musical structures and stuff within my head, but the moment I play something, it vanishes just like that.
Is this familiar to you?
And do you have any tips on how to cope with this issue? |

I work in reverse to begin with. The beat (a good drum loop) provides a great groundwork. I usually just stick in a standard Stylus loop to work with for a while and slowly replace it with all my own samples and single hits.
Then after some basics are done, turn the percussion off (I have all mine in a folder track in Cubase) and your ideas will be different.
Sometimes you need the beat to fit melodic groove to, sometimes you work better without it - maybe for long evolving melody.
Depends I guess.. |

I tend to write my part first, without playing it with a beat, and then to check how it sounds, then I'll unsolo the rest of the stuff... for me listening to the same beat in loop while I'm trying to make a new part just annoys me more than anything else... but I always write my kick and bass first... I need to feel the ground before I can take off in the sky.

i think i recognize what youre talking about Djones.
i lay the theme of the track first, record it using a click track, THEN i start thinking of beat and bassline

sometimes all i can think about is which vst i'll write the bassline.no thoughs or ideas what to do next.
my advice to you is to focus on the main project and what kind of music you want to make.now that you have a direction , the kick and bassline will come easilly.
btw if you definetly ran out of ideas and don't have a clue what to do , create kicks in sound forge sometimes i spend days creating kicks cuz i don't feel creative . |

I usually have the exact opposite: i listen to an almost empty track or groove and i start to get ideas that could fit. I then turn off the rest of the track and build the idea, and next i turn the rest of the track on and make it fit. But yeah, i have to turn off the rest of the track to be able to maintain a focus on the new part and get it about right. Awww the human mind *sigh*, the most illogical heap of hacked routines in the universe. |

Djones,
I understand exactly where you're coming from here...
It is essential to aknowledge the fact that what's going on in your head will be very little related to the actual outcome. Once you come to accept it, you'll feel less dissapointed from this - and won't be losing the drive to continue.
Let's say you have a huge idea in your head, you can start putting it down - once you feel the idea is not likely to be the same originally, you just need to flow from the point you got so far.
Of course you can always keep the original idea in your head still, and maybe take more things from it as you progress more in the real world producing.
I'm not saying that this is always the case - and you can of course try and put your whole idea down - working immensly doing so. Imagine what folks like Bach or Telemann were doing when they couldn't even hear their first 4 bars in a loop.

i almost never have specific idea from before open the computer
just start to flow and one sound tells me what should come next
but i do aproach music making with diffrent moods , which can help set up the general vibe of the track
with that evry once in while i have idea that i should make , and when that happens i dont let anything disturb me from complete the mission

what u require is a trained ear.
With a trained ear u would realize figuratively what it was that u were imagining and could transcribe it.
Iv been studying composition for a while now and for me its more about what I want a section to do and then decide what would best fit, then design that what.
Lucky accidents aside usually I get what I was intending at least in mood or continuity ...
Read "composing Music: a new approach" by William Russo.
This will take u a while to read, but will hone your ideas, make them more consistent and technically compelling, and save u the time of reinventing the wheel needlessly. |

How about trying to make music while sober? I know it is a wacky idea but you never know.

well to djdonis, if u stated ur usually high and u lose track then maybe, u shouldnt smoke b4 a trax, not to sound like a dick, and i was victim of that action when i stopped i got more accomplish, getting high when ur a rookie is awesome and inspiring but when ur an old skool burnout well u tend to get lazy and stuff thats from my own experience, get high when ur finish and its more rewarding, plus then when ur high u can take notes on what u need to tweek being high is great for mixing for me but not for creation, maybe lsd but still
its been years lol
i recommend u to buy a cheap cassette player and mummble or sing ur parts that way u can't forget em
apply that and holla back with ya progress! |

what if you don`t have issues getting high??
Here in SA we smoke all the time because we can.
I wouldn`t dream of doing anything dope free.
And I have no real issues getting things done.
I think the problem isn`t with getting high but rather as Bukboy discussed, the problem is in the translation from brain to midi.
As far as recording ideas with a tape recorder, I`m all for that.
Make any random recording of your ideas and from there if you forget it atleast you have some incling of an idea. |

I like getting high jaja but it gets me lazy or too distracted, but for mixing and tweeking tendiously its really a blessing, u somehow are able just sit there and tweak to perfection without getting anxious but seriously I think a mistake alot people make is getting high makes me more creative which is just bullshit!!!
now if we wanna get into the topic i can say lsd makes
u more aware and creative, it's truly a religious experience I'll never forget my first trip, listening to pearl jam's ten, man i could have swore the track was saying my name not jeremy what the fuk!!??$%@
anyways moving on i don't see anything wrong with experimentin with drugs for productions but just don't make it a habit, its easy too fall into the mindstate of im better when im fucked up, i see it alot with rappers aswell, a true artist should be fresh and creative without any substances, to eaches own...
REX Whats SA, hmm wheres that... sounds like a layed back town, dam this post is turning into a druggies hangout, what a change of direction...
anyways here in miami, cops are dicks they'll find a nick and they'll arest u, which is just plain bullshit, burnouts for the most part are peaceful, now crakheads and coke heads those peoples got issues also alcaholiks, dam i haven't tripped in like 7-9 years
i sure like to get blasted and work on a track on lsd...
ps, if u work just fine high then to eaches own do whatever works for u just dont fall into that mindstate of i need to be high to be fresh, plus if u abuse it chances are u will grow more tolerant, Best advice is everything has its limits don't abuse it and you'll be fine too much of anything is not good, Period Peace!!!
