Do you guys find that the audio quality differs greatly from one audio interface to the other? I've never been able to tell the difference besides how many sounds I could play at once..maybe I've just never had a really nice audio interface?

it depends but from going from eco mia to rme i have heard a noticeable update , tighter low end ,more clinical sound ,but there is some placebo too, also if you record external source ,in a full track it can make difference with lot of tracks recorded

Today even cheap converters perform really well, and the difference between a sound-blaster and a high-end professional interface is not that big.

If you have very good monitoring it can be worth spending on very good converters, but even cheap soundcards have enough dynamic range for most speakers to handle. And they have a flat enough response and low enough distortion to be considered transparent.

One big issue with soundcards in my experience is the level of output.
Ideally you don't want to have to pre-amplify the signal in the mixer, nor do you want an input that is too hot.
Especilly when playing live and connecting though a DJ-mixer, having the wrong output level can have a significant effect on the sound quality. Probably that makes a bigger difference than if you compare quality of a €80 converter against a €800 converter.

Also, performance and stability of drivers is important. RME has very good reputation for that. I use an Echo Indigo DJ, which I find very solid, and I'm running it at 32 samples buffer with no issues.

Regarding different interfaces, unless you are recording a symphony with endless number of channels, bandwidth of FW/USB/PCMICA is not an issue.
USB has been very flaky for realtime applications, but that has improved and it's today a viable option.
FW is good at delivering a stable data stream, but unless you have a full-size connector on your laptop I would stay clear of it. The small FW connectors fitted on most laptops are really sensitive, and I would not like to rely on one for a performance.
I'm happy to stick with PCMCIA for now, and I guess in the future I might be looking for an ExpressCard.           (``·.¸(``·.¸(``·.¸¸.·`´)¸.·`´)¸.·`´)

Hi, here is my Raport regarding the Steinberg MR816 Firewire Audio Interface:

I tried it with my Quadcore DAW under WinXP and W7x64.

Connected to the onboard FW-port(TI) and to a PCI-FW-Card(VIA).
When using it under Cubase5 I get dropouts all the time, even at the highest possible Buffer Size.

The ironic part is that the onboard realtec Soundcard is working much better and without any dropouts.

Conclusion:
I send it back and get a PCI Audio Interface to get sure.

What do you thing about the RME MultifaceII PCI?

I haven't tried to produce anything in like 5 years and looking to get a cheap interface.
What is considered the best bang for the buck with USB interfaces these days?
I'm looking for something that is like what m-audio audiophile was back in the day...
Anyone try any of these super cheap 30 dollar USB interfaces like Behringer UCA202
I don't care so much about the sound quality but I do care about the driver stability for running SX...no special drivers for Behringer UCA202 doesn't sound too great.

I feel ALL FW interfaces ive ever tried has had hickups with any other FW-controller than those with chips produced by Texas Instruments. Never had any problems with PCI (now PCI-E) so Im sticking to that.

i got no issues with my FW..its not a TI chip..

got an fireface 400..

i think this whole TI chipset thing is overrated..got many customers who are quite satisfied with their "normal" ones..
