Pulling teeth seems less painful than this.
I have emailed many people.. including countless Indian tech support people who have nfi what Im talking about.

As some of you already know- For total audio compatibility with external firewire interfaces the notebook needs to have a TI Texas Instruments Firewire controller

So..
I would really appreciate if anyone could tell me what 17" notebooks have the TI chipset
>please check your system properties/device manager*+

Do any of these models have them? - I emailed them and was told to email HP/ASUS/MSI

Thanks plp.

I just bought a TI chipset firewire PCMCIA card to hook up my m-audio audiophile, and it now works perfectly. I suggest if you do not find a laptop with the chipset, do the same, + some of these will set you up with 2 or more firewire slots. Just make sure you know what you're getting, and DON'T EVER go for 4pin firewire connections in laptops, even with TI, look for 6pin IT IS A MUST, or you'll end up spending another $20 on a PCMCIA card           Monitoring devices, know where you go

x101 - doesn't matter. i'd say 40% are via chipset and another 40% are ti chipset. both works ok with audio gear. the rest 20% may or may not work, but it probably will. besides, you can always geta pcmcia card.
you won't need a 6pin connection if you have a DC input on your interface and got where to plug it in.

working and working properly is two different things... after buying a laptop with a non properly working 1394 id definetively think its worth putting some extra energy and money into something that works good.

The problem is not the power, the problem arises when it comes to cabling, the 4 pin connection is very unstable, yet usable if you never ever touch the cable nor slam hard on your laptop's keyboard I have been using 4 pin and 6 pin connectors for a while now, and have always had a pain with a 4pin one, don't know if it's just mine (but browsing the forums you see millions and billions of threads about losing connection) but as soon as you get a 6 pin connection, all the troubles go away, as it allows the cable to sit comfortably inside - you can even throw it in places, careful though
So take my word for it, go for 6 pin, anyways you will need your DC in, as 6 pin on laptops doesn't usually provide enough power. Good luck with your search           Monitoring devices, know where you go

The Ti chipset is very bad work with DICE2 sound interface like a Tc Konnekt and Presonus. Also a NEC controllers is not best choice for this. I have a very stable work with most cheap via 6306 or 6207(6$!!!) and horror problems with Texas Instruments chips. My notebook with SIS chipset is work nice too.           www.myspace.com/timezeromusic
