ok everybody so we got a AMD athlon xp2400, 2 Maxtor udma-133 80gb harddisks with 8mb cache,A7V8X Asus Motherboard,512mb Ram.
Now the question is, is it better to run the harddisks in RAID mode?
Has anyone of u tried this before for music?
Or should we use them as one system harddisk and one audio harddisk?
And what is the best OS for music ,Win2k or XP???           Visit our website at: http://www.tegmatekk.com

hi,first of all congred. about the new copm.
now for your q. you certtenly dont need a whole h.d for the system unless you mean system->programs you can give your audio and alot of h.d to the projects, for the os you can give 6gb spase it will feet.
my advice to you since you have lots of spase give one h.d to the all other stuff that not audio or music producing,it could be internet or vidoes, imeges, grafical prog. ect.
arrange your h.d's logicaly and keep it order it will help you from crushing.
good luck guys!           "move your body! if you don't have one, GET ONE!"

in normal circumstances you don´t need raid.
just use them as is instead.
i have a wd 80gig for my system and a wd 120gig
and these disks have the highest transfer rate of current ide drives. most new disks can tranfer at a sustained rate 30-40 mb+ which is more than enough. also the disadvantage in a raid setup is that if one disk fail they all fail.
rme has some wonderfull indepth stuff on this.
and their homepage is always a visit worth for getting info regarding hd-recording: www.rme-audio.com see the tech info documents there.           Mastering available here:

Tegma, dude, I can tell you abouty the RAID. Using RAID-0 is best for system and HD reading and writing performance, but not so reliable, if one of the disks crashes, the whole array will be broken. Other RAIDs is not fittable for ya.

If you want to know more, PM me.          Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

Well, XP would be the best choice IF you tweak it to be performance oriented. Otherwise, win2k would be a better choice. You don't need to use RAID, it'll just complicate things. You probably WON'T need to use the HDD cache, and if you will, RAID or no RAID the track will stutter.

Like LSDream said, RAID-0 is the only one you should use, as the others (RAID 1+) are mainly for keeping information secure and stuff which is very handy for servers with 4+ hard drives, but not practical for home use.

About tweaking XP for audio work, this should be of help:

RAID-1 is used for mirroring, for example you want to backup your audio data in real time. This means, everything changed to one of the disks in the array will be immediately mirrored to the others. Most of tuned RAID-1 arrays will not slow the performance, but you need to know how to tune it.

If I'd got new computer I would put 4 disks in two RAID arrays.
System disks (smaller ones) in RAID-0 - so the system and virtual memory will be much faster - about 150% performance increase. And my data to put on RAID-1 disks.           Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

Dunno about RAID, but installing 2000 instead of XP will be stupid.
Go for XP, and install the Service Pack (available from windows update).

Tegma -- congrats on the AMD purchase Almost exactly the same stuff as I've bought a week ago: Athlon XP 2400+, ASUS A7V333 mobo, 512 RAM. Runs twice as many plugins as a friend's P4 2.4, so performance-wise it's just perfect for music production and heavy sound processing..

Can I ask you what heatsink you're using? What idle/loaded temperatures are you getting?

As to the OS question, I vote for WinXP.

I've been running my Athlon on this puppy for over a year.. it is about an inch tall and the fan is chassis size so replacing it is easy. also has a thermostat but you won't be needing it.

I'll probably be in here a lot--just getting my sound.
