I dont see techno more predictable, i think in some ways its even a smarter structure, 'cos u have to keep the groove and the listener's attention with less elements, it's more about the rythm than the melody, stronger and larger basses.
I find more freedom making tech house than when i tried to make trance....im not bashing trance at all i still love it, but for the its was the same bass, lead, sounds., here as i said its more about keeping a good groove/rythm i still thank psytrance i learned a lot while trying to make it. |

Good thing trance tunes are not predictable...I mean its not like every tune has a 16th bassline and has lots of dBlue glitch audio parts, inserted on the master chain, now is it? Random glitches are pretty unpredictable, I mean an algorithm generating random audio parts shows real skillz! and kbbb patterns with the same 24dB/8ve saw bassline are a revolution! The fact that techno producers never thought of that shit before is testament to how forward thinking some music critics that listen to nothing but trance, are.

if you ever listen to AREA 38 on Sirius Radio or any of the other Techno stuff, you can listen for 5-10 minutes without any very obvious changes in anything. The songs just sit idle forever. |

what he said. Moreover, professional techno producers show a billion best skills than trance producers imo...

depends on the artist hugaw, not everyone boils in the same pot nor has the same view, knowledge, aspect, talent etc
the fact that lots of irrelevant ppl think of that just because you can have a simple daw build, you can make music, really good or really shit, does not represents the hole scene, same goes for techno "producers" (hate that word too)
gimme the best techno producer and ill give you Simon.. its not a big deal, theres nothing to compare.

Couldn't it be that in one respect it's more difficult to produce minimal music? After all, there are less elements in the music and thus there's a demand on the part of the artist to succeed in making music that's interesting and not merely repetitive.

I think its very narrow minded of trance artists/fans to say that techno is predictable. Trance production has a lot of cliches as well and there is predictable/unpredictable, good/bad trance music as there is predictable/unpredictable, good/bad techno music.
I like making both trance and techno tunes and I can tell you that one of the things I enjoy the most in techno music is that I can make whatever kind of bassline I want when making techno tunes. Notes falling under the kick, long notes, short notes and the option of bass patches simply has no end. It can be a saw, a lumpy sine, a square with a slow attack on the envelope modulating the filter, a combination of clicky triangle waves...whatever. The tune can be as intricate as a hypnotic sub bass that sounds idle, yet there are complex 808 rim shot patterns, constantly evolving to the point where no two bars sound the same. The whole track can be a 16th C Swing quantize where only the kick snare and crashes are clean 16ths....the list goes on. It takes a lot more skill to make a driving minimal tune where you have less elements to work with.
I also love it when I make a trance tune and I get to dig in the most driving 16th bassline with a phat pulsating mood saw driving the tune along and finding a ripping high pass line that will have me wanting to scratch the paint off my studio walls.
They both have their style and allow me to express whatever vibe I am in.
There is no comparison, this is not a competition. Its just a different kind of music that we like making when we are in a different kind of mood.

yeah there is some nice techno out there. however, a lot of the top techno i've heard is not very good at all. the song wont change from minute 1 to minute 9 and its not even all that good at minute one. by minute 9 it is wretched but some techno artists do some interesting things with their bass. i would like to master techno percussion myself so that i can use it in other aspects of music.

Define "top techno". IM are considered "top trance" by the masses, as do GMS as is Astrix. I think all of them are boring and most of the times awful sounding. To someone who does not know trance music well enough to know there is a lot more interesting stuff under that surface that most people know as "trance", they are the "top trance" people. Which is obviously not the case.
