The powercore comes with good FX, EQ and compressor.
The virus on it should be good as well, although a virus is IMO the most overused synth available, so not such an exciting feature.
So in the synthesis department powercore is not as interesting IMO.
The Scope will not come with not so great basic processing, but if you get the sonic timeworks plugins you have great EQ, compression and reverb.
The mixer sounds really good and the synths included and available free is many and great.
The modular synth is really astonishing, especially with the Adern Flexor plugs.
If you have money for more extra synths as well try synths like the Zarg Dark Star or Pro-One.
Some people don't get along with pulsar it seems though.
It can seem to complicated and do take a bit of preformance of the host with it's fancy GUI.
Latency is not amazing but ok with the ULLI hardware ASIO.
On a 6 dsp card you can almost make a track using pulsar synths only if you are very economical with what instruments you use.
I normally run mixer, kick and bass synths, one fat modular and maybe one less demanding synth, a reverb and a couple of sonic timeworks compressors.
But I don't mind to record my sounds down as I go along really, otherwise I would really like a 15DSP card

ok , thanks for tht info Spindrift .... so basically i think i should be going in for the Scope Professional [15 dsp chips ] card ... hey , but im still not very clear about this latency issue with these cards ....
could u please explain a lil more in detail .. as to generally how much is the latency and what are its consequences ... also , the pulsar connects as a pci card right ?

If you want to use a DSP card just for mixing, the UAD-1 by Universal Audio is also an option, especially the compressors you can run on this card are amazing.
And like Spindrift said, it can be a pain in the *ss to work with the Scope (previously Pulsar) platform cards. These cards have some of the most exciting features, but the progamming of the interface with your sequencer is so crappy that it can take you ages to get it to work properly. A friend of mine, who is a computer programmer has had a really bad time getting the Pulsar 2 to work with Ableton Live for example. Keep this in mind. But when you get it to work some say it's dsp-synth heaven.
The UAD-1 and Powercore plugins just load like normal VSTi's. Like they should imho. |

I agree that the UAD-1 seems like a very nice option for some extra mixing DSP.
But no I/O and synthesis.
There is the XTC mode on the scope products so you can use the synths and FX just as VST's.
I don't know any pulsar users that do though, and don't know how well it works.
The point with the pulsar is the flexibility.
I love to be able to easily patch in sidechains, send a audio track to control an envelope follower in a modular synth, use a few synths through a multiplexor, sent out your lfo's as MIDI back to the sequencer etc
So XTC mode is not an option for me at least.
Sequencers is too limited in their routing possibilities compared to a proper analogue studio, but the pulsar enviroment recreates that flexibility.
I find it a very well laid out representation of an analogue studio and easy to use, but many people do not get along with it from what it seems.
And I never had problems running it with different software. Live works just as well as logic with it for me at least.
But it does take a bit of resources from the computer like I said, and can be fuzzy about the components used and don't like some mobo's.
A high latency means that when playing an instrument it will be a small delay from when you press the key or tweak the knob until you get a sound.
On the Pulsar it's not a problem although it's about double compared to an excellent driver like RME.
It's still below the limit where it becomes really noticable though and hence is not much to be concerned about.
The bundels included with the card have been varying a bit so I'm not sure what you get with the scope project.
But there is also a lot of very nice stuff from 3rd party that is not included and not available cracked, so to get the best out of the card you need to spend a bit on extra plugins.
As I mentioned, Sonic Timeworks Reverb, Compressor, EQ and limiter is very nice to get nice mixing capabilities on the card.
All synths by Zarg is great: red dwarf, dark star, pro-one, pro-five.
Minimax by creamware is a tempting option that I havent tried myself.
And Adern Flexor for the modular is really a must.

I've been lurking on Ebay, on the lookout for a pulsar 2 card @ a reasonable price. Haven't found one though... I'd really like to use a modular synth without freaking out my cpu. Drool....
About how many effects you can load on your Powercore: i use it with one Virus synth, 2 or 3 MegaReverbs, a Classicverb and a couple of eq's. Then there isn't space left for another Mega reverb or another heavy plugin. But those 3 or 4 reverbs help to free the CPU of a huge amount of processing.
The latency has to do with the way data travels to and from the pci cards (dsp). This data travels in blocks that have to go to (1st cycle) the dsp card and back (2nd cycle). This is a problem you will have with all dsp cards. |
