superglue, stop being an ass. you only make your self look dumb when you start ignorant arguments           www.organicparadox.com

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

In the UK, something is 'sound' when it's really good. A sound engine is therefore a really good engine; something like a 2.5 litre turbocharged BMW engine... or the Mallard, the fastest ever steam locomotive.

Compare this to an 'unsound engine', like the 1.9 litre deisel in my Citroen, whose fuel consumption has recently gone through the roof.

Don't you know ANYTHING?

Sorry Superglue, I was being facetious.

In VST instruments, 'Sound Engine' refers to the programming code used to derive audible output from the parameters available. Synths with different sets of parameters will necessarially have different sound engines as the coding used to generate their sounds will be different.

Likewise, different versions of the same synth (eg. Pro 52/Pro 53) may have different sound engines as improvements to the code may allow for better quality of sound or more efficient CPU usage.

In DAWs, the term 'sound engine' refers to the code used to integrate plug-ins to the audio streams, and combine those streams (after modifying their level with faders) into the required number of output channels, eg. mono or 5.1 surround. This is not as simple as plain addition for reasons I'm not quite technical enough to explain myself (but have to do with - amongst other issues - combining audio streams of different bit-depths and converting them to the bit-depth used by the audio hardware), and since there are several different methods of doing all this, each with their own advantages or disadvantages, the subjective quality of host sound engines (eg, Fruityloops and Cubase SX) may differ from each other in ways that might be expressed as 'better' or 'worse'.

I think...

Quality is more than 16-bit or 24-bit; it's how the sounds are made in the first place that defines the quality of the sound. The bit-depth with which they are output is (to some extent) just the icing on the cake.

Like I said... improvements in the code that generates the sound results in slightly different sound for the same parameter values that will, hopefully, be an improvement.

If you want to know more, go get a degree.
