I have been listening to psytrance for several years and want to try out music production now finally after all these years..
I have learnt from this forum that I should at least get a decent soundcard for this, as something like an audigy will really not be satisfactory for anyone whos even semi-serious abt production.
And this is where my confusion lies. A friend of mine who is into music production suggested to me that instead of buying a pro soundcard, I should go for a TASCAM US-428 DAW. He says that it has a built in sound card, and has a lot more besides. Pls note Im a newbie so I really dont know much at all. So is what he is saying true, and what other ways would the tascam help over a professional soundcard. In other words, what exactly can and does a DAW do and why would I need one?
Also, if it is indeed better to invest in a DAW than a soundcard, then are there suggestions other than the tascam tht anyone would recommend?

psypox .. thanks for the suggestion, I checked it out. It seems quite decent, though if I were to buy a soundcard i`ll probably look for something better as its a one-time investment.

But I still dont know what is the advantage of a DAW over a sound card. Can someone explain this to me please?

I think all Tascam interfaces are looking very sweet. Never used one - but they sure look as a potential buy:

They're pretty decent. The US-122 is great for travelling or on-the-road. it was really intended for guitar players, it's made of rubber and steel and it feels like you could kick it around or toss it into the back of a truck (!) and it would still work great. (Unlike the Emagic 2/6, which feels like it would shatter if you dropped it once). The XP ASIO drivers have been awesome with Cubase SX. But it's pretty minimal, basic ins & 1 stereo out, no SPDIFs or anything.

I saw the 428 at a friends house, it did have a bit of the plastic toy feeling to it. But considering the price they're asking....it's pretty sweet. I saw it advertised for $300 USD, so, yeah, that's pretty awesome for even a standalone ASIO card, considering this is an actual control surface too... You could pay a lot more for something that's just a card that does less.

I've never been too tempted by the DAW interface thing, but at could be nice to have stop/play buttons and some assignable faders etc.

thanks aeon .. that made things clearer. I will most likely buy it.
This thing has several advantages for me. For one, itll act as an external soundcard. Ive got an HP computer, so inserting an internal card may be a problem cuz if I do it myself, the warranty goes void n if I ask them to do it, theyll charge an unreasonable amount for the service. Besides, external devices are way more convenient, and this way, I can run it on my laptop too.

It's perfect for that, as long as you don't need more than 1 stereo output.

It's simple, straightforward and has been very stable on my system. (XP pro w/Cubase) If you're on Mac, I can't say. I've heard Tascam tech support is lame, but I've never needed it, and frankly there's only so much to it. There's 1 audio driver and that's it.

Like I said above, it's very sturdy and solid, and will survive travelling. It's made of STEEL not plastic.
