Is this an actual sound card?? I was considering getting MOTU UltraLite and then came across this Is this a soundcard as well as a hands-on mixer?? Or am I mixing something? Can I use this for making my psy tracks or is it better for recording and mixing live instruments? Is this better than UltraLite?
Looks pretty damn good Has anyone used one? Opinions please Thanks!

Ok
Well I need a soundcard that will handle lots and lots VSTs, synths + effects and will not crash, will be reliable and have as low a latency as possible.
I just bought HP Pavillion dv6700 laptop and installed XP on it, my Edirol UA-25 (USB2) sound card runs like crap on it, constant glitches etc. For some reason it used to work much better on my old Dell Inspiron laptop, still glitched every few minutes but not as often as now.
So I want to buy a solid piece of gear that will handle heavy data, that is my priority Sick of glitches and crashes, can't make music at all on that!!
Essentially a goodFirewire sound card is my answer, right? |

Well handling lots of vsts and low latency has nothing to do with your soundcard ( low latency depends to a certain amount on the drivers) it depends on your CPU and how fast it can process the data from the audiobuffer. Did you try to increase the buffer, i think thats why your experiencing glitches and dropouts.
Considering that you mention crashes, i take for granted that you mean your sequencer by that statement, the follow up question will be: How much cracked software are you using?

Yeah I tried playing around with the buffer size and that had no real effect
I am happy to have higher latency if that will help me with glitches but so far it has not. What settings should I have for drives in my Cubase in the preferences panel to help me achieve the most stable combination?
Cracked software? All of it I am certainly upgrading to the real thing in the next month or 2... don't think I will be able to afford Cubase 4 and I have not found Cubase 3 for sale anymore so looks like I will have to go back to Cubase 2 SX. At least it is cheap and legal
Cracked software effects performance yeah? |

Try to increase the buffer size start from the biggest you can choose than working your way down until you start noticing glitches and dropout samples, when you do increase buffer one step

Cracked software is most likely to cause your stability problems and im not talking only about the sequencer, every plug you use that is cracked could cause a crash since you have NO idea what part of the code they have modified in the cracked version.

Hmm those are all good points!!
But my new laptop is using the exact same copy of software as my old laptop but the sound card screws up a lot more often and the new laptop is better/more powerful??
Also the sound card skips even when I'm playing music through winamp, so it's not to do with the cracked software then? |

Lets say it this way: you install a cracked version SX3 with the "emulated" synchrosoft dongle on one computer. And on the other computer you install a legal version of SX3 and with the actual synchrosoft dongle.
Which one of these do you think has the biggest probability to fail?
Or are you suggesting its equal probability?

Crackling on old computer went away with bigger buffer size but skipping always remained on any buffer size even with winamp playing an mp3.
On new laptop the skipping is pretty much constant even when playing winamp and changing buffer sze seems to have little effect (if at all) on crackling in cubase.
I'm actually an IT developer by trade and the theory in regards to cracked software that I heard that seems probable to me is that the reason why cracked software is unstable/drains resources is because most of the resources are drained just to overcome the protection mechanisms while using the software. |

I might suggest you to fine-tune your windows so it uses less resources for itself and throw it on to audio. Helps to get rid of certain glitches sometimes, also get the latest drivers etc, you know how it's done

Hmm there is a newer version of drivers, will try that! Thanks for your help guys.
BTW my new laptop prtty much has nothing on it other than music apps... what else can I do to help optimise it? It is a pretty good machine, Core 2 duo 2.4 with 3 gigs of RAm, shouldn't choke so easily I don't think! |
