You guys...the most simple way to create a bassdrum thats perfect for your ear is by using soundforge.
go to "file and press new....create a mono 16 bit file.
than go to "tools", "synthesis", "Fm"....
this will take you into the soundforge fm synthesizer.....now all you have to do is make the line go from the top left to the bottom right. also , make sure that the sample isnt longer than 1 second (it shows the length in the upper area of the screen). now set the Db to 100% and the hz can be between 50 to 70 or even 80 depends on what kind of sound you are looking for.
id try it on 60 hz for starters
now press ok.
you will get a sound that is nothing like a bass drum...it will sound like a really deep bass fading out.
the next phase is to go to "effects", "Pitch", "bend". now you should "play" with the pitch envelope so u start hearing something that resembles a bassdrum and dont forget to crank the semitones upwards.....
this last process of pitch bending should be repeated until you get the sound you want and at the end wave hammer the kick.......
If something here isnt clear pm me...i'll be glad to explain |

but what about for the people wanting to create a kik with a VST?
i dont want to use a wav for my kiks so i can program them as i go.
are you music makers using VST's for kiks?
all i ever hear is the sound forge way.

I am sure that this has been discussed to death before, but nevermind. Katam is correct that the SF procedure will work for synths, but the cool thing with using a synth is that the process is far more interactive.
What you are doing is taking a low frequency signal and *very* quickly bending it up and then back down again. There are two ways to do this on synths: either use a pitch envelope on an oscillator or, the better way, use a resonating filter. You need to use a pure wave like a sine wave because pitch bending a wave with more overtones (like a saw) will produce extra harmonics which you don't necessarily want. And this is also why the resonating filter approach works better than using an oscillator: it produces a far purer and more powerful sine than most oscillators.
What you need to do is set filter cutoff pretty low, res pretty high. Then set the filter envelope with quickest attack and low to low medium decay. Set Env->Filter amount to maximum to start with. You should hear that laser zap sound. Now, by adjusting Env->Filter amount, resonance, cutoff and the envelope parameter values you should be able to create a massive variety of kicks with frequency ranges that are sympathetic to your bassline as well. |

Why not use stomper?
It's much more accurate and smooth than the sound forge method, and you can add a bit of dist & noise to the waveform

its the same if you use a vst or not, the vst just plays it live from the sequencer and with the wav file you play a recorded file in a sampler.
its true you can make some changes while you go if you are using a vst, but you can also do some automatation in the sampler, or just put some fx vsts (eg filter) in the kick channel and do some automatation it them also |

personally i shove my drum hits into battery, and you can alter the pitch envelope, amp envelope, distortion amount, sample pitch, loop length, sample start, etc, etc, etc ...in their... so it may as well be a synth really

hye there...
well, even if i use mostly softwares, the kicks are anyways always audio samples that i collected from everyone for years...but if one day i lose all of them, there are two ways to create a kick that will be similar to mine...the first one is, as said upper, the sound forge synthesis tool....very easy to make..just go to the infected mushroom website to see the "tutorial"....
then, what i do, when i have some kicks i like, i put them through a compressor, that i touch while i am recording in soundforge or any other software...like this, i will have a lot of diferent...and also, why i prefer like this, it is just because i don t like to have an opened compressor on my cubase channel, just because sometime the way i put the compressor is really good for when there are normal kicks, but the first one after the break is low because of the comp..or where there is a kickroll..so like this i have an audio sample of a kick which have the same sound than with the comp...
the second way is to use the free "KICKME" synth in Pulsar...i use pulsar a lot, and since i have it, all the work i was doing in Reaktor, i do it in the pulsar...but reaktor is still a very interesting program, with a lot of synths and presets....
hope i had helped you...

Thanks for the tip talamasca, nice to know that adern plugin KICKME is actually used by trance artists, I always found it to be too heavy
Do you have any flexor tips for a starting producer? |

I'm not sure I understand your technique on compression. You are Compressing the Kick in Soundforge and saving it as Audio as opposed to bringing in the dry kick sample into cubase and adding a compressor as an insert effect? |

Well not really in real realtime, but you could try using automation to do it realtime-ish. Then decide which option pisses you off more
