What do you guys think, is it worth the $ investment to take all my tracks for my new album to a studio with good dry acoustics and great monitors + shitboxes and do the mix for my album there?

Also, how would you go about doing this? since i work in audio almost exclusively, some of my tunes can consist of 50-70 audio tracks. i don't want the hassle of trying to mix 50 tracks while thinking about the hourly rate of the studio.

So of course i will record and bounce sounds intro groups, but what strategy would you go for here? Kick/Bass/Drums alone but what about all the sfx, psy twerps? Leads alone or group some of them also? what do you think is a reasonable number of tracks to work with in such an environment? 20 tracks?

Lastly, once i am in the studio should i just focus on levels or also route shit through whatever external gear they have? I don't want to re-produce my tracks, just mix there as well as i can, but maybe i will be missing out this way...?

The cost of doing this would approach the cost of getting acoustic tiles/bass traps and maybe a decent set of monitors...unless you know someone who will do a special price for you.

Peace out.

yeah don t worht it imo unless you are ready to get poorer, it will take time to make the money back , not enought money in psytrance to do stuff like this i think, might depends the price of the studio you can do this though. good monitors and treat the rooms if you didn t already have both ,might be a better solution in the long run

i have mid level monitors, but the room needs to be treated.

i figure i could get about 20 hours studio time for about 450-500$ or so. but lets theoretically put the money issue aside, just for the discussion, how would you approach doing this?

i would treat the room and send the music to a good mastering studio (that don t mean expensive )

that is as of this moment the plan, the next topic i was going to start is about how to approach choosing a mastering house, but i was going to wait with that

For the kokopelli compilation we did in 2007 we used http://www.amsterdammastering.com/ A guy called darius van Helfteren. He did an excellent job for about 500,- euro. It was in the old studio though. Prices might be a bit higher now. But he is doing most of the big artist in the Netherlands. Don't forget to check the construction and studio pics.......

About the mixing: Get better monitors and acoustics (as has been said).

To continue on topic:
i would bounce all sounds with any processing that isnt important for the actual sound. So take off all eq's, compressors, limiters, reverbs (unless it is part of the sound) etc. And keep all the things essential for the sound/ track. For example keep some delays on the sound that are difficult to reproduce.
Right down where each sound starts and bounce bars. Not just the sound. This makes it easier to reproduce the sound. So if a sound starts at bar 18, bounce 17- 33 or 17-21 if it is short.

i also started mastering more seriously since some time, my site are not ready yet , my room not finished and i m still waiting for some new gears (can t wait for my next comp and my passive eq with tube amp,it will be a unic piece of gear moded !) so i haven t promote it yet, but i offer free demo and low price for now...

well i have had some of my stuff mastered by some of trance's leading mastering people, and i have reservations about all of them... how do you know who to trust, after all, you are paying loads of cash.

if it doesn't sound WAY better than what i can do by myself there is no value here imo.

imo the accoustic treatment + good monitors are better investments. do the mixing yourself in your own studio.

for mastering http://www.emasters.co.uk/

they mastered shpongle, prometeus.
kevin metcalfe mastered sonic species - machina terra ep.
http://www.emasters.co.uk/ClientPage.htm
big names on the client list..
obviously not cheap.

the music has a lot of grit and lofi grunge to it, anyone can recommend a mastering engineer with a background in grungy electronic/metal but that also has the right ear for trance?

i guess any good mastering engeeiner will do the trick if you tell exacly what you are after, thats the key. if you want some color ,some hype, transparent, loudness, to try to correct stuff you don't like in the mix, stuff like this.
