Is it run-on-demand, or does it always run as a background task?

Its a run on demand application (You can schedule it to run automatically too, obviously) I like it too, along with spyware doctor, they're good if you use internet on the same machine (like me)

Can anyone recommend a good defragmentation tool..or is the one in windows xp good enough?

New Era buy an external HD it's really useful and cheap for what it is (just a little more than a normal HD). USB 2.0 or Firewire is a MUST have for this.

I am rebuilding my DAW at the moment. (Just waiting for the new PSU). This is the way I plan to set things up:

- 1 (SATA) OS disk with 4 partitions for various installs (1x Win XP for internet, 1x Win XP for audio, 1x Win 2003 server for audio (NUMA test), 1x spare to mess with. After each OS install, I'll ghost the OS install for quick recall. I'll also ghost after installing all Apps.

- 1x (SATA) audio data disk
- 1x (SATA) Samples library disk
- 1x (SATA) Various data disk
- 2x (PATA) Various data disks (Ghost images etc)
- 2x (SCSI) More audio/video data disks

The idea is that the OS, samples, audio data, video data and the picture cache (CakeWalk thingy) are all on different drives.

Hand tweaking of all services and configs. Audio OS setups won't have internet access (maybe . The Internet OS will have ZoneAlarm and Ewido anti-malware (or similar).

The PATA disks will serve as temporary online backup for the SATA disks. Offline backups made to DVD (SCSI and SATA Plextor drives).

Regular defrags with Diskkeeper.

All this is hanging on a LAN behind a firewall.

Well ... that is the plan at least.

Heya!

It might be worth checking out the following link with "tuning tips" for windows xp:

http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php

Hadn't much time to read the whole thread, hope that's not too much off the topic..

If you have 2 pc's, optimize one for audio (without anti-virus program) and use the other one for internet and other stuff (an anti-virus program on your internet-pc is enough, if you have a cd or so for your music-pc, you can check it on the internet-pc first..)

Tune Up is also said to be good (though i can't tell). I was told that it's a nice tool to clean up your registry.. You'll find a 30-day free full version on the homepage;

Just to add. Don't forget to take care of the outside of your PC by removing the dust on all your equipment. Use a vacuum with a thin nozzle attatchment to get into all the difficult to reach cracks.

Oh, and be careful doing your keyboard. If you use a laptop the keytops suck off fairly easily.. not that I would know!

Just gave it a try, its pretty similar to tuneup..It managed to find some errors & files that tune up wasn't able to so i guess its good to run them both every now & then!           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic
