hello!
today i opened my pc and before booting a message appeared saying that windows\system32\config\system file is missing or corrupted..and prompted me to boot from the windows cd-rom to fix the problem.
at the main windows installer view i choose the 'repair' function by pressing 'r' and then i have no clue at all what o do....
anyone knows what's going on??

Whats going on is that a file needed to boot wndows is corrupted.
I would know what to do but you have to let me know of the different options that come to you once you press repair
Anyway unless you really have to save some of the content on your windows partition, I strongly advice to reformat your c: and reinstall a fresh copy of the os.
My advice get hold of the windows xp pro student edition. |

ok after the repair mode it goes to some kind of dos [cmd] so just try chkdsk c: with all the paramters on
type chkdsk /? to see the command
or try fixboot i think
chkdsk have fixed this problem several times for me but it takes long hour to complete [it goes over and over again] |

I fix computers as my primary job and I can tell you with almost completey certainty that this problem can be fixed with chkdsk. Chkdsk is best (or depending on your circumstance - only) run from a separate drive to the one you want to fix. Try getting hold of a premade BartPE environment, or a version of windows that can be run from a USB key. If all else fails, take your hard drive out, plug it into another machine, and run chkdsk on it there. It's possible (depending on your folder encryption settings) you'll be able to pull files off too so you can grab your important stuff for backup if needs be. |
