my synths always sound in the background, i want them to stand out, come out, explode out, i feel like they get thrown to the sides.

what are some possible causes and what are some possible ways to correct this problem?

i am using cubase sx with pulsar 2 card.

i find most synth sounds can benefit from inserting a blood overdrive (free vst - use google) on the channel... without turning up the drive, settings on minimum - it just gives things a little more bite and 'stand out' factor.

another good plugin to use in the same fashion is the tc filtrator - turn the drive up just a tiny bit and your sounds instantly are more fat and present.

as for throwing them to the sides, sounds like you need some stereo interest - my most common combination is a touch of chorus and a medium amount of pan-modulated filter-delay (hipass filter mode can also help the synth to 'sizzle'). but stereo phasers, flangers, multiband autopanners etc are all worth giving a shot.

if i want a single really fat killer synth, then for best results i will usually end up mixing 2 or more layers each with different processing - eg one wide swishy fizzy one with lots of scuzzphut6, ohmboyz, chorus, reverb, and one down the centre with some slight hipass and blood overdrive and a bit less reverb, etc, etc.

layering can be very important.           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

one major problem i might think of is simply volume. try turning up the volume of those synths even if the whole mix clips - just to hear how it sounds.

for some synth phatening jobs, chorus... highmid+high freqs boost or do some notch filter job.

You can extend the sound to more channels - sending left and right to 2 sepperate busses with different eq settings, mostly hi passed or band passed on high freqs, and delay them by 50ms. Mix those busses with the orignal, play with their volume... might help.

try using compressor, exciter and not tooo heavy use of reverb ( stereo-image in the center or small reverb times)
also some ad-limiters can do the job.

good luck

oh ... yeah... i kinda took compression for granted as i do it automatically these days, without even really thinking about it. definitely very important tho           http://www.dartrecordings.co.uk/

how do I route the output of the vsti into another channel or buses to add effects to it? I'm using cubase sl 1.06 and z3ta+ 1.2?
