I found a whistle preset once.
So basically it concisted of a White noise osc.
And it was distorted, with a really heavy amount of resonance. Like really heavy. Then play with the cutoff, and do this at low volume yes.
You need to be really really careful with cutoff. :l

i tried just for shits and gigs, and found bandpass to be the best sounding filter.
also 6-7 voices sounded better than 1.

bassy, very thin pulse wave into two bandpass filters in series (try parallel too, not sure...) would be the audio side. the control side would be more difficult, joysticks might help, along with a nice envelope gen.

it's easy, you have a modular synth with all the modules needed.
1) series means the audio goes through one BPF, out of that, into another BPF, and out of that. one, then the other, in a straight line, so to speak.
2) parallel means the same audio is multed, and fed to the two BPFs at the same time. the two outputs from the BPFs are then mixed together.
the resulting sounds you get when processing in series vs. parallel configurations can be very different. the korg ms-20 operates it's LPF and HPF in series, for example.
using a very bassy and thin pulse wave will give you the throaty, organic vocal type sound to start off with.
using the two BPFs will create two formants, and if you can find the right frequencies, you'll get very vocal type sounds, just like a jew's harp.
a basic textbook on synthesis, such as allen strange's "Electronic Music: Systems, Techniques, and Controls", explains this well, but you really need to try it out!

You mean analog modular right?
I don't think the Virus filters for example are good enough.
